Huddersfield Town Owner Defends Chief Amid Criticism

Huddersfield Town owner Kevin Nagle has leapt to the defence of sporting director Mark Cartwright, calling the criticism “highly overblown”.

The Terriers’ chief has been under fire for the club’s transfer policy as the club looks set to fall short of their initial automatic promotion expectations, with multiple signings facing lengthy injury setbacks. Two more players were taken out of action in their midweek loss to Wrexham in the form of Josh Koroma and Nigel Lonwijk.

Nagle Defends Cartwright

Speaking to the media following their loss at home to The Red Dragons, the American businessman responded to the criticism tabled towards his sporting director. (Quotes via Yorkshire Live):

“I think that is highly overblown. There’s a very extensive review process that is done before we sign somebody.

“I am part of that process. If people think that is the case, then they can blame me just as much as they can (with) Mr Cartwright or anyone else because we have a whole plethora of people that look at that particular person from character to their ability to play and on-field capabilities are right on (written) down, including injuries. I am not challenged by that at all.

“We need to support the club and players. We don’t need to boo them. Boo them if they don’t really play well in terms of not giving 100 per cent. But the reality is we have not really seen that yet. The execution part has not always been there. But these are players that are also sensitive as well.”

Fans are right to voice their concerns about the transfer policy as their signings across the season have been hampered by injuries across the campaign. The club, even with their fitness issues, have fallen short consistently across the season and fans should be allowed to express their discontent with the situation when justified. They cannot be expected to be pleased with how their side have played if they have failed to score at home in 2025 and just one win in West Yorkshire in eight matches.
