Former West Brom Defender Becomes Free Agent

Former West Brom defender Joe Mattock has entered the free agent market after his departure from National League North side Marine was confirmed.

The 34-year-old, who has had a long career in English football, briefly featured for Sheffield United during a loan spell from West Bromwich Albion in 2011 before going on to play for rivals Sheffield Wednesday and Rotherham United.

Brief Spell at Bramall Lane

He began his career at Leicester City, progressing through their academy and making his senior debut in 2007. Despite signing a long-term deal, he sought a move after Leicester’s relegation in 2008.

He joined West Bromwich Albion in 2009 for £1 million, but struggled for consistent game time, leading to loan spells at Sheffield United, Portsmouth, and Brighton & Hove Albion. His stint at Bramall Lane in 2011 saw him make 13 appearances, though he couldn’t prevent the Blades from relegation.

In 2012, Mattock joined Sheffield Wednesday on a three-year deal, but after an inconsistent spell, he was released in 2015. He then signed for Rotherham United, where he enjoyed the most stability in his career, making 225 appearances over seven years. He played a key role in the club’s promotions and cup success, including the 2018 League One play-off final and the 2022 EFL Trophy triumph.

Following his release in 2022, Mattock moved to Harrogate Town before brief spells at Hartlepool United and Marine.

What’s Next for Mattock?

Having now left Marine due to travel difficulties, the experienced left-back will be evaluating his next move. Given his vast experience in the Football League and South Yorkshire connections, he could still be an attractive option for clubs in need of defensive reinforcements.

However, he couldn’t sign for a Football League club, given the transfer regulations, so it’s likely he’ll continue the non-league odyssey closer to his home. Expect a short-term deal until the end of the season, affording him options in the summer.

Writer’s View

Joe Mattock’s career trajectory reflects that of a player who has consistently adapted to the challenges of English football but has struggled to settle at a club long-term outside of his successful spell at Rotherham United. His journey from Premier League hopeful at West Brom to a reliable Football League veteran saw him contribute to several promotions and cup triumphs, particularly with the Millers.

However, his recent moves to Harrogate, Hartlepool, and Marine suggest a player nearing the twilight of his career, now facing the uncertainty that comes with being a free agent at 34. Given his vast experience, there could still be lower-league or non-league interest, but whether he still has the drive to continue at a competitive level remains to be seen.
