With ten Bristol Rovers players set to see their contracts expire this summer, head coach Inigo Calderon has admitted that he is yet to consider extensions as the club focuses on avoiding relegation.
The League One side faces a crucial final stretch of the season, and while fans may be speculating on which players will stay or leave, Calderon insists contract discussions are not a priority at this stage.
Calderon: ‘Too Early to Decide on Contracts’
Among the players whose deals are set to expire are experienced names such as James Wilson, Grant Ward, Jack Hunt, Scott Sinclair, and Chris Martin. Wilson, in particular, has been a key figure for Rovers, featuring in every minute of League One action so far this campaign.
“No, not really. There’s still two months [of the season left]. It’s too early for me to say. I understand, I’ve been in the situation where you finish your contract at the end of the season. For me, it’s important that everybody tries to do their best, and that will put them in a better place.”
Calderon emphasised that the focus should be on performance rather than future contracts, explaining that strong individual displays will benefit both the players and the club.

Who Could Stay and Who Might Leave?
With the club’s strategy often geared toward younger players, it remains uncertain whether veteran figures like Wilson (who recently turned 36) and Martin will be retained. However, Wilson’s strong performances this season put him in contention for Rovers’ Player of the Year, making him a key decision for the club.
Ward, another experienced player, has shown his importance to the squad after overcoming past injury struggles. Prior to his recent ankle setback, he had started nine consecutive matches under Calderon, and his presence has noticeably strengthened Rovers’ midfield.
Meanwhile, Jevani Brown—who was loaned to Notts County earlier in the season—recently returned to the squad, signalling that he could still have a role to play before his contract decision is made. Similarly, Romaine Sawyers’ future will depend on his impact in the final months of the campaign.
Decisions Delayed Until Survival Is Secured
With Rovers fighting to remain in League One, Calderon made it clear that contract discussions will only come into focus once the club’s immediate future is more secure.
“If we improve as a team, it will be better for everyone. I’m not going to start talking about that because there’s still a long time and a lot of things to do.”
As fans debate which players deserve new deals, Calderon’s priority remains on ensuring Bristol Rovers finish the season strongly.
Writer’s View
Calderon’s cautious approach to contract renewals is understandable given Rovers’ league position. However, delaying key decisions too long could risk losing experienced players who have been vital to the team. While performances in the final months will play a role, Rovers must be proactive to avoid losing key assets for free in the summer.
