Swansea City director of football Richard Montague has outlined the club’s vision for a new manager, insisting they are searching for a head coach who is at the “forefront of the game.”
Montague, who recently joined from Notts County, is leading the recruitment process after Luke Williams’ departure. Despite the club’s recent struggles, he believes the Swansea job remains highly attractive to prospective managers.
Patience Key in Managerial Search
Montague has already held informal discussions with potential candidates but insists there is no rush to make an appointment. Interim boss Alan Sheehan is currently in charge and could remain at the helm for the rest of the season.
“All options are on the table at the moment. That’s as honest as I can be.”
Montague acknowledges that leading the managerial search was not his expected first task upon arriving at the club. He had been preparing to work alongside Williams once more, having previously enjoyed success together at Notts County.

Philosophy Matters in Recruitment
A key aspect of Swansea’s next appointment will be ensuring continuity in their possession-based style of play. Montague believes that maintaining an attacking and progressive approach is crucial to the club’s long-term success.
He stressed the importance of recruiting a manager who not only embraces the club’s traditions but also keeps them ahead of the curve in tactical and technological developments.
“We need to be at the forefront of what’s going on in football, on the data side, the recruitment side, strength and conditioning, the medical side. That’s the only way to get to where we want to get to.”
Swansea’s reputation for high-quality football is something Montague believes makes the job particularly appealing. He noted that the club’s educated fanbase provides an environment where managers are given time to implement their ideas.
Sheehan a Contender?
Sheehan has started his second spell as caretaker boss in impressive fashion, guiding Swansea to a 3-0 win over Blackburn Rovers. With the club now 10 points clear of the relegation zone, there is no immediate pressure to rush a permanent appointment.
Montague has not ruled out the possibility of Sheehan being given the job on a long-term basis.
“I think it would be negligent to rule anything out at this stage.”
The search for Swansea’s next manager remains wide open, with Montague confirming that overseas candidates are also under consideration. For now, Sheehan is expected to continue leading the team, with their next challenge coming against Preston North End on 4 March.
Writer’s View
Montague’s approach suggests Swansea are prioritising a long-term vision over a quick fix. Their focus on playing philosophy rather than short-term results is commendable, but it remains to be seen whether they can attract a manager who truly fits their ambitions.
With Sheehan making a strong start, he may well be given the chance to prove he is the right man for the job.
