Derby County Sanction Player Exit

Derby County academy defender Ryan Bartley has joined National League side Gateshead on a permanent deal until the end of the season.

The right-back, who had not yet made a first-team appearance for the Rams, now looks set to bolster Gateshead’s promotion push.

Gateshead Tapping Into Derby County Prospects

Former Derby defender Ben Radcliffe, now at Crawley, played a key role in the transfer by providing a glowing recommendation of Bartley’s ability. Radcliffe, who had previously enjoyed a successful loan spell with Gateshead, was asked for his verdict before the deal was finalised.

“Ryan showed real commitment and willingness to be a part of the club. The biggest nod that he got was from Radders [Ben Radcliffe],” said Gateshead boss Carl Magnay.

Bartley joined Derby from Crystal Palace in 2023 but had spent this season on loan at Hereford United, gaining valuable experience. His permanent move to Gateshead is expected to provide him with further first-team opportunities.

Gateshead’s Derby County Connection

This is not the first time Gateshead have benefited from Derby County’s academy. Last summer, they signed Owen Oseni following his exit from the Rams, with the striker going on to score 12 goals in 24 appearances before being sold in January.

Radcliffe also spent time at Gateshead before moving to Crawley, and the club’s links with Derby appear to be paying dividends.

What’s Next for Bartley?

With Gateshead pushing for a playoff spot in the National League, Bartley will be hoping to make an immediate impact. The Heed are well-placed to challenge for promotion to the Football League, and his arrival adds further depth to their squad.

The young defender now has the opportunity to prove himself at a club that has become a stepping stone for former Derby players looking to progress in their careers.

Writer’s View

Bartley’s move is another example of Gateshead’s growing relationship with Derby County’s academy. The club has shown a keen eye for developing young talent, and if Bartley follows the path of Radcliffe and Oseni, this could prove to be a smart acquisition. With Gateshead pushing for promotion, his performances in the coming months could be crucial.
