Hull City head coach Ruben Selles has urged his players to maintain their high standards after a vital 1-0 win over promotion-chasing Sunderland boosted their fight for Championship survival.
The game was decided in the 18th minute when Black Cats goalkeeper Anthony Patterson fumbled Joe Gelhardt’s corner into his own net. Hull then held firm against sustained Sunderland pressure, securing their fourth away win in five matches.
With a crucial fixture against Cardiff City on Tuesday, Selles has challenged his team to claim back-to-back victories for the first time since his appointment in December.
Ruben Selles Demands Ruthless Mentality
Hull’s resilience at the Stadium of Light proved pivotal as they frustrated Sunderland and capitalised on an early mistake. The Tigers’ defensive discipline was key in denying the home side a way back into the game.
“It is about us, the next game, our attention to win the game. This was a fantastic job and we had to show character, be good defensively,” Selles said. “We have to be ruthless. If we keep defending as we do, especially away from home, then we will do well.”
The head coach acknowledged Hull’s struggles to build momentum, but insists his side must develop a winning mindset.
“Now we have a challenge. We have not been able to back up our results by taking three points in consecutive games. We need to go on Tuesday, perform well, show character and then the score will take care of itself.
“Things happen in football but if we go there with personality and saying ‘nobody wants three points more than us’, that should be the mentality.”

Tigers Withstand Sunderland Pressure
Hull’s defensive organisation was tested throughout the match, but Sunderland failed to capitalise on their chances. Patterson’s early mistake proved decisive, despite his strong save minutes later to prevent Gelhardt from scoring directly from another corner.
Dan Ballard saw a headed effort saved before half-time, while Wilson Isidor missed a clear chance to equalise when he headed wide from a Trai Hume cross just before the hour mark. Late attempts from Eliezer Mayenda and Patrick Roberts also failed to break through Hull’s backline.
Writer’s View
Hull City’s ability to grind out results on the road has been a major factor in their survival push, but the real test lies in their ability to replicate that form at home. Selles’ call for consistency is well-founded – if the Tigers can string together consecutive wins, their Championship future will look much brighter. The challenge now is proving that they can sustain these high standards beyond individual performances.
