Birmingham City are set to be without five key players for their upcoming League One fixture against Leyton Orient at St Andrew’s.
The Blues are dealing with multiple injury setbacks that could impact their performance as they navigate a crucial week in their campaign.
Blues’ Growing Injury List
During their goalless draw against Reading, both Scott Wright and Lyndon Dykes added their names to Birmingham City’s injury list, which already included star striker Jay Stansfield, Marc Leonard, and Lee Buchanan.
Stansfield, the club’s leading scorer with 20 goals this season, suffered a leg injury in the recent Vertu Trophy semi-final against Bradford City. Initially feared to be a knee issue, scans confirmed that the problem lies in the femur. Despite no structural damage, head coach Chris Davies remains cautious.
“It’s a heavy knock to the leg. It’s not ligaments, it’s not structural as such, but it’s a deep problem within the leg. That’s why it’s complicated,” said Davies. “It’s not going to be months, it’s not going to be a few days, but it’s going to be somewhere in between.”
Meanwhile, Leonard is recovering from a deep laceration to his knee sustained in an FA Cup clash against Newcastle. The midfielder is expected to return to training in the next week, provided his wound heals as expected.
New injury concerns emerged during the Reading game. Dykes pulled up with a calf issue and is unlikely to feature against Orient. Wright, on the other hand, suffered a suspected knee ligament injury after his studs caught in the turf, with further scans required to determine the severity.
Buchanan, who sustained a severe knee injury against Blackpool, has already been ruled out for the rest of the season. The left-back is in the early stages of rehabilitation but will not return before the summer.

Key Fixtures Ahead
These injuries come at a critical time for Birmingham, who are facing a congested fixture schedule. After taking on Leyton Orient, they face a high-stakes clash against second-placed Wycombe Wanderers. Missing key players could prove to be a significant setback in their push for promotion.
Despite these setbacks, Davies has expressed confidence in his squad’s depth, suggesting that younger players and squad members will have to step up during this testing period.
Writer’s View
With five key players sidelined, Birmingham City face a real test of squad depth as they take on Leyton Orient. Stansfield’s absence, in particular, leaves a void in attack, and Davies will need others to step up in his place. The Blues have shown resilience this season, but with a crucial fixture against Wycombe Wanderers on the horizon, the timing of these injuries could prove costly.
