Premier League Side “Confident” Of Signing Burnley Star

Newcastle United are reportedly “extremely confident” of securing a deal for Burnley star James Trafford this summer.

The Clarets’ shot-stopper has been the standout goalkeeper in the Championship this season, conceding nine times and keeping 23 clean sheets in 32 matches.

Magpies Confident But Complication Emerges

According to Craig Hope and Simon Jones in the Daily Mail, sources are “extremely confident” that a deal to take the former Carlisle United man to St. James’ Park will be completed in the summer. Eddie Howe’s side had previously approached a deal for Trafford last summer, with Fabrizio Romano since reporting that the verbal agreement made between the North East club and the player is still valid.

However, Newcastle may face competition from current Premier League champions Manchester City, who Burnley purchased the 22-year-old from in 2023 after his stellar season on loan at Bolton Wanderers. It is believed that The Cityzens would have to pay a fee of around £40 million as part of a clause to bring him back to Manchester.

It is also thought that a deal to sign Trafford would go through, regardless of if Burnley are promoted or not. Currently, Scott Parker’s side sit in third place, five points behind Sheffield United in second place and seven behind leaders Leeds United, with the two Yorkshire sides playing each other this weekend.

James Trafford looks like he may move on this season from Burnley and from this season he would be leaving on one of the highest notes possible. His brilliance this campaign has shone through and has kept The Clarets competitive in the promotion battle with his efforts, especially against Sunderland with two penalty saves. Moving to Newcastle would see him become the number one choice there and with Martin Dubravka signing a new contract, it leaves Nick Pope in no man’s land. A move for their former player could be a good choice to replace their outgoing hero for the Lancashire club.
