Sunderland AFC have announced a revamped coaching setup following the departure of Mike Dodds.
The news comes as former Carlisle United goalkeeping coach Tom Weal joins on a short-term deal until the end of the season.
Weal Joins as Sunderland Reshuffle Staff
Weal’s arrival comes as Sunderland adjust their coaching structure after Dodds left to take up the head coach role at Wycombe Wanderers. His appointment will allow head of goalkeeping Alessandro Barcherini to take on a broader role within the coaching team.
Sunderland’s head of coaching Stuart English welcomed Weal’s addition and expressed confidence in the expertise he will bring to the club.
“We are delighted to welcome Tom to our coaching team and although he will predominantly work with our senior goalkeepers, we are looking forward to seeing what fresh ideas and perspectives he can bring to our Club.” – Stuart English, Sunderland Head of Coaching
Weal, who previously worked with MK Dons, Notts County, and Norwich City, had been with Carlisle since last year and notably coached current Sunderland first-choice goalkeeper Anthony Patterson during the player’s loan spell at Notts County.

Club Statement on Coaching Restructure
Sunderland confirmed Weal’s arrival in an official statement, outlining the updated coaching roles at the club.
“Sunderland AFC is pleased to announce Tom Weal’s appointment as First Team Goalkeeper Coach. Arriving from Carlisle United on a short-term contract, Tom has previously undertaken roles with Norwich City, Nottingham Forest, Huddersfield Town, Notts County – where he coached Anthony Patterson – and Milton Keynes Dons.
Tom’s appointment until the end of the season will also enable the Club’s Head of Goalkeeping, Alessandro Barcherini, to further support first-team requirements throughout the rest of the campaign.”
The changes complete Sunderland’s senior coaching staff setup for the remainder of the season, with the club expected to reassess the structure in the summer.
Writer’s View
Sunderland’s coaching reshuffle underlines a pragmatic approach to mid-season adjustments following Dodds’ exit. Weal’s arrival fills an important void, while Barcherini’s expanded role suggests a push towards greater tactical and analytical input. The move provides stability for the squad, but the long-term coaching strategy will likely be reviewed once the current campaign concludes.
