Sheffield Wednesday Boss Makes Free Agency Admission

Danny Rohl has said that Sheffield Wednesday may explore a move in the free-agent market to resolve their defensive injury crisis.

The Owls were hit with the devastating news that Di’Shon Bernard would be out for the rest of the season with an injury that required surgery. The club also sanctioned a loan move away for young left-back Sam Reed on loan, meaning there are few defensive options are available within the squad.

Owls Open To Explore The Market

News of a potential incoming were sparked following the confirmation of Wednesday’s squad list for the rest of the season, with goalkeeper Ben Hamer being omitted from the final list, freeing up a place in the 25-man senior player list.

Speaking to the Sheffield Star about the decision and if that opened the possibility of a free agent signing, Danny Rohl said:

“If something happens, he (Hamer) is straight back on the list. The market is normally closed but if something is out there in the (free agent) market then let’s think about this. But it is not an easy topic. In March we must submit the final list and so it gives us an opportunity, but it is not a big, big opportunity. We do not expect or demand too much now, we try to do our homework. If we have the feeling something makes sense then we will do it, if not we can be OK.”

Fellow defenders Dominic Iorfa and Akin Famewo were also left off of the list as they recover from their own injuries.

Writer’s View

With Di’Shon Bernard’s injury, Sheffield Wednesday are now in a very precarious position and are now considering what options they have on the free agent market. Whether the club actually act in the market is another question with both Dominic Iorfa and Akin Famewo both edging closer to returns, but a setback for either could force The Owls’ hand.
