Sunderland sporting director Kristjaan Speakman has revealed that the club remains in a “strong position” following a busy transfer window, in which several key players, including Chris Rigg and Jobe Bellingham, attracted interest from top clubs.
The Black Cats secured multiple deals in January, bringing in Enzo Le Fee and Jayden Danns on loan while making Wilson Isidor’s move permanent. However, much of the window was spent fending off offers for some of their most exciting young talent.
Sunderland Rejected Big Offers for Starlets
Among the players who drew significant interest were Rigg, Bellingham, Dan Neil, and Tommy Watson. Speakman confirmed that Brighton submitted a £13 million bid for Watson on deadline day, which was ultimately turned down.
Reflecting on the club’s approach to keeping their core players intact, Speakman told safc.com:
“Often not enough is made of being able to retain talent. In January, there are lots of competitors and teams who lose key players.
“Our ownership has been really firm on the fact we are trying to retain and build. That often means you are making difficult decisions in turning offers and opportunities down.
“We’ve got such a committed playing group that it doesn’t become a difficulty for us. Everyone here is focused on the remaining games and getting us to the top of the table.”

Jayden Danns and Wilson Isidor Deals Explained
One of Sunderland’s late additions was Jayden Danns, signed on loan from Liverpool. Speakman described how the club had long been tracking the forward and moved quickly when the opportunity arose.
“We were looking to add another forward and we looked long and hard for the right profile from a football perspective. We also wanted the right character, and we felt with Jayden we’ve got a bit of both.”
However, he also admitted to an unexpected hurdle:
“Unfortunately, during our due diligence, we found an underlying issue with him which means he will be out for a little bit of time. It’s incredibly frustrating for us and for him.”
Meanwhile, the permanent signing of Wilson Isidor was described as an easy decision.
“From a football perspective, it was relatively easy with his impact on the team and the league. Removing the ambiguity of a loan move gives him the best platform to perform for the rest of the season.”
Writer’s View
Sunderland’s ability to keep hold of their most sought-after talents in January could be crucial as they push for promotion. While the temptation to cash in on big-money offers is always there, retaining players like Rigg and Bellingham gives the Black Cats a better chance of achieving their long-term ambitions.
