Doncaster Rovers defender Joseph Olowu is being targeted by Championship sides Derby County and Hull City, according to Football League World.
Centre-back Olowu is out of contract in South Yorkshire at the end of the season, and appears to be attracting interest from higher divisions. Both Derby and Hull are fighting for their Championship survival at the moment, and will be targeting players who can help them in either the second or third tiers next season.
League One Reading are also reported to be interested, though Derby or Hull will surely hold the upper hand in negotiating if they stay in the Championship for the 2025-26 campaign.
These moves likely hinge on Doncaster’s fortunes for the rest of the season. Rovers are going well in League Two and are in with a shout of promotion in third place, though the top of the division is as volatile as ever. Should they get promoted, there may be a chance of keeping Olowu, but if they stay in the fourth tier it is highly likely the defender will leave the club.
The 25-year-old Nigerian has become one of Doncaster’ star defenders, which has seen him linked with a move away which may see him climb the football pyramid further. Olowu came through the academy at Premier League giants Arsenal, going on loan to Cork City and Wealdstone before leaving North London in 2021 without making an appearance. He has been at Doncaster since then, playing 139 times in all competition. His four year stint in South Yorkshire appears set to end this summer, but where he will go remains to be seen.
Writer’s View
Olowu has always been solid for Doncaster, but his form has hit new heights this season. Doncaster will hope they can keep him if they are promoted to League One, but staying in the fourth tier will almost certainly mean losing him. As for the interested clubs, this is a wise decision as Olowu is more than capable of playing in League One. He might not be at Championship level yet, but it is no surprise that he is attracting interest.
