Our 3 predictions for Sheffield United vs Middlesbrough

  • 1st prediction: Sheffield United to win or draw
  • 2nd prediction: Under 2.5 goals in the match
  • 3rd prediction: Both teams to score – No

1st prediction for Sheffield United vs Middlesbrough: Sheffield United to win or draw – 33/100

Both Sheffield United and Middlesbrough are great teams with good managers and players, and have found themselves high up the table. Sheffield United are going for automatic promotion and have a promotion-worthy squad and manager, and have home advantage. They’re exceptionally well organised and hard to beat, especially at home, which will help them here. Middlesbrough have some fantastic players going forward but are slightly suspect at the back at times, which the Blades may exploit. The home side have added well, as have Boro, but the away team’s recruitment happened later in the window so they will have had less time to gel. Ultimately, with the side United have, it’s hard to bet against them getting a result against boss Chris Wilder’s former club.

2nd prediction for Sheffield United vs Middlesbrough: Under 2.5 goals in the game – 17/20

This one is going to be close, and there may not be many goals involved. Sheffield United don’t score too many but they concede even fewer, and have made Bramall Lane a fortress so far this season. They’ve made a strong habit of getting ahead and holding leads, even if it isn’t pretty. While Boro do have an abundance of quality going forwards in the likes of Ben Doak, it’s likely Sheffield United will restrict them to very few chances with their defensive structure. Put simply, if Boro go a goal down, it’s hard to see them breaking down their opponents and getting back into it, so this game may be decided by one goal.

3rd prediction for Sheffield United vs Middlesbrough: Both teams to score – No – 21/20

This prediction is pretty much based on the last two – Sheffield United are favourites for what is likely a low-scoring game where United will try and restrict Boro as much as they can.  Chris Wilder always sets his teams up exceptionally well and makes them hard to beat once they get ahead – a win over former employers Boro will be a bonus. While Boro do normally score, they have had a fair bit of attacking turnover in January so may be struggling to click at this stage. With this in mind, expect another Sheffield United clean sheet.

Full preview of the game: last results and head to head

This is a huge game at the top of the Championship with both sides going strong; a win for Sheffield United could see them go top of the league while a Middlesbrough win would potentially push them into the play-offs if results go their way elsewhere.

In terms of form, Sheffield United have the upper hand, which is also highlighted by their league position. They’ve lost only one of their last six, winning the other five, which has seen them go three points clear in the automatic promotion spots. Middlesbrough’s form is more mixed, with two wins and three losses in their last six. In their previous matches, Middlesbrough lost 3-2 to local rivals and promotion hopefuls Sunderland, while Sheffield United beat struggling Portsmouth 2-1.

Historically, this is a fairly even fixture, with 35 Sheffield United wins to 31 for Middlesbrough. Boro did win the reverse fixture at their ground 1-0 though, which will leave Sheffield United hoping for revenge.
