Watford head coach Tom Cleverley has heaped praise on midfielder Imran Louza, describing him as ‘outstanding’ following his performance in the Hornets’ 2-2 draw against Sunderland at the Stadium of Light.
Louza, 25, was on target with a stunning long-range strike, while Tom Dele-Bashiru also netted from the penalty spot. The result leaves Watford in 10th place in the Championship, just three points off the play-off spots.
Cleverley hails Louza’s influence
Speaking after the match, Cleverley was full of admiration for the Moroccan international, highlighting both his technical quality and his resilience in recent months.
“I’ve not watched the goal back yet, but Imran’s got that in his locker. He’s been outstanding since he came into the team two or three months ago,” said Cleverley.
“The side to Imran that people don’t see is he’s played through pain a lot recently. He’s really showed character and leadership skills. That was an excellent strike today, and he’s capable of that.”

Louza’s resurgence at Vicarage Road
Louza, who has been with Watford since 2021, is under contract until 2028 and has become a key player under Cleverley. After a loan spell at FC Lorient last season, he has now re-established himself in the Hornets’ starting XI.
The former Nantes midfielder has made 82 appearances for Watford, scoring eight goals, and continues to provide a creative spark in midfield.
Watford’s promotion push
Despite conceding late against Sunderland, Watford can take confidence from their performance as they look to mount a serious challenge for a play-off place.
Their upcoming fixtures present a significant test, with a home clash against league leaders Leeds United on Tuesday followed by a trip to Middlesbrough at the weekend.
Imran Louza
Louza began his footballing career at the Nantes youth academy in 2006, having joined from Etoile du Cens. In June 2021, the midfielder completed a move to Watford for a reported €10 million, signing a five-year contract until 2026. He made his Premier League debut on 21 August 2021, featuring in a 2-0 defeat against Brighton.
Louza registered his first goal for the club on 8 October 2022, scoring a free-kick in a 3-1 loss to Blackpool. However, his season was disrupted by a serious injury sustained against Millwall, fracturing his fibula and suffering ligament damage. In January 2024, Louza returned to France, joining Lorient on loan with an option to buy.
Writer’s view
Louza’s return to prominence under Cleverley has given Watford a much-needed boost in their push for the top six. His technical ability and leadership qualities have been invaluable, and if he continues this form, the Hornets have every chance of making a late surge towards the play-offs. However, consistency will be key as they face a challenging run of fixtures.
