Former Sunderland Boss Lands Top Flight Role

Simon Grayson, the former Sunderland manager, has secured his next managerial role with Lalitpur City in Nepal.

Grayson, 55, will take over as the head coach of the reigning Nepal Super League champions as they prepare for the 2025 season. Grayson, who spent time managing Bengaluru FC in India’s Super League before leaving in December 2023, had been linked with several jobs following his departure, including the India national team.

Grayson’s Journey in Asia

Grayson’s most recent stint was with Bengaluru FC, where he guided the club to the Super League final. However, his team fell short in a penalty shootout against ATK Mohun Bagan. The former Preston manager’s coaching philosophy has garnered international interest, and his next project in Lalitpur City presents an exciting opportunity for both the club and Grayson. The Super League in Nepal offers a unique challenge for him, as he looks to develop a winning team and raise the standard of football in the region.

Grayson’s Legacy in English Football

Grayson’s career in English football is well-known, especially for his time at Preston North End, where he successfully guided the club to promotion from League One to the Championship in 2015. After leaving Preston in 2017, he managed Sunderland, Blackpool, and Fleetwood Town before venturing into international waters with Bengaluru.

Grayson’s tenure at Sunderland was short-lived, lasting until the end of October 2017. Struggles marred his time at the Stadium of Light, but he went on to enjoy a productive period with other clubs, including Bradford City and Blackpool. His journey has now led him back to Asia, where he will work with Lalitpur City, a team with aspirations of retaining their Nepal Super League title.

Grayson’s Vision for Lalitpur City

In his statement, Grayson expressed his excitement for the new challenge, saying,

“I’m delighted to have joined Lalitpur City Football Club for the 2025 Nepal Super League. Even though it’s only a short two-month league, I’m really looking forward to coaching players, developing a team, and improving the standard of Nepalese football both on and off the pitch. Working with players on a daily basis is something I love doing, and working in a different country always takes you out of your comfort zone and to a new level of experience.”
