Millwall boss Alex Neil anticipates intense competition for starting spots following the club’s aggressive recruitment drive in the January transfer window.
Squad Depth a Welcome Change
The Lions secured eight new signings last month, six of whom bolster the attacking ranks—a stark contrast to the injury-stricken squad that struggled for options just weeks ago.
With players such as Calum Scanlon, Femi Azeez, Josh Coburn, and Aidomo Emakhu sidelined, Millwall’s lack of depth was a concern. However, Neil now faces a different challenge: managing expectations and maintaining squad harmony.
“It’s a better problem to have,” said Neil. “It’s more of a juggling act in terms of trying to keep all those players happy, but it really is quite straightforward. If you deserve to play, you’ll play, and if you don’t, then you need to do more.
“There’s been no promises made to any player. Everything to this point will be based around what they’re doing, how they perform, and that’ll be a dialogue that I’ll have with them continually.”
Neil emphasised that while Millwall may seem overloaded with attacking players, not all recruits are expected to make an immediate impact. Some will be eased into first-team action gradually, while others will need to prove themselves in training before earning minutes on the pitch.

Deadline Day Frenzy
The final days of the window were particularly hectic, with Millwall securing six new arrivals in just four days. Among them was highly-rated Zak Lovelace, who rejoined the club from Rangers.
Neil explained that Lovelace, alongside Ajay Matthews and Benicio Baker, had been on Millwall’s radar from the outset of the window, and their signings were planned well in advance. Meanwhile, cover was also added in key areas, including left-back, where Camiel Neghli was brought in to provide competition.
Despite the flurry of business, Neil is confident that each acquisition has been made with a clear purpose in mind. Some players will step straight into the first team, while others will need time to adjust and develop.
Writer’s View
Millwall’s January window signals an ambitious push to strengthen the squad and compete more effectively in the Championship. While Neil now faces the challenge of managing expectations, the added depth will be crucial as the season progresses. The competition for places could elevate performances across the board, ensuring that only those in peak form make the starting eleven.
