Carlisle United Misfit Eyes Permanent Exit

Luke Armstrong has expressed his desire to make his loan move to Motherwell permanent after a promising start to life in the Scottish Premiership.

Armstrong Thriving in New Surroundings

The Carlisle United striker, who joined Motherwell on loan in January, netted on his first start for the club in their 3-1 defeat to Celtic. Despite the loss, Armstrong was inspired by the experience and is already considering a long-term future at Fir Park.

“Yes, I’d love to,” Armstrong told The Herald when asked if he wanted to stay at Motherwell beyond this season. “Obviously, I’ve only played a couple of games so far, but that experience [against Celtic] was unbelievable. You don’t get that in League Two or League One… that experience and the exposure that the Scottish Premiership brings, you want to be involved in that.

“I want to come here, do well and probably try to stay up here if it keeps going well.”

The 28-year-old forward remains under contract at Carlisle until 2027, but his spell at Brunton Park has been underwhelming. Since arriving from Harrogate Town in a club-record deal last year, Armstrong has managed just six goals in 45 appearances. The move to Scotland represents a fresh start, and he is eager to seize the opportunity.

Why Armstrong Chose Motherwell

Armstrong revealed he had multiple offers in January but felt a switch to Motherwell was the best option for his career.

“I couldn’t stay at Carlisle and not be playing football. You have to be playing,” he said. “Obviously, there were conversations with a few teams and this one really stood out as the one I wanted to come to.”

Despite his enthusiasm, Armstrong has seen upheaval at his new club. The manager who signed him, Stuart Kettlewell, resigned just a week later, citing fan abuse. Caretaker boss Stephen Frain is now in charge, while Kettlewell’s name has surfaced among potential candidates for the vacant managerial position at Carlisle following Mike Williamson’s sacking.

For now, Armstrong’s focus remains on helping Motherwell climb the table, with their next test coming at home against Ross County on Saturday.

Armstrong’s desire to stay at Motherwell underlines the impact of playing at a higher level. While his time at Carlisle never fully clicked, the Scottish Premiership provides a stage for him to rediscover his form. If he continues to impress, Motherwell may push to secure his services permanently—but much will depend on the club’s managerial situation and how the remainder of the season unfolds.
