Details Of Failed Lincoln City Transfer Emerge

Lincoln City were left frustrated on transfer deadline day after losing out on a key signing to a League One rival at the last minute, according to Director of Football Jez George.

Despite working hard to secure a loan-to-buy deal for a Championship player, the Imps were outbid late in the day, with their target instead opting for a club that matched his second-tier wages.

‘Frustration Close to Devastation’ – Jez George Reacts

Speaking about the collapse of the deal, George revealed the extent of the club’s disappointment.

“We’d agreed everything yesterday. It would have been a loan with an option to buy, a really exciting one for us as a club. A player in absolute prime, a top player in League One,” he said.

However, at the eleventh hour, another club swooped in and hijacked the deal.

“We got completely and utterly blown out of the water by a club who lost their other target and jumped on our deal at the last minute. The player rang me this morning to say he was on the way to that club to do a medical.”

George admitted the late twist was a bitter pill to swallow:

“That was, how can I say, a bit of frustration at the start of the day—frustration close to devastation, to be honest. That’s how it felt because when you do so much work and think you’ve got someone who could make a real difference, it’s a gutter.”

Concerns Over League One’s Financial Landscape

Beyond missing out on the signing, George also voiced concerns over the growing financial disparity in League One. With Wrexham spending £2 million on Sam Smith, Huddersfield splashing £3 million on Joe Taylor, and Wycombe turning down a £7 million offer for Richard Kone, it has become increasingly difficult for clubs with smaller budgets to compete.

“League One seemed pretty mad at the start of the season. We get the benchmarking, we see where we are—19th in the budget table. We see we’re two million off 10th, and three and a half million off playoff positions. Then in January, suddenly, you see million-pound transfers between clubs in the same league.”

Writer’s View

For Lincoln fans, this deadline day heartbreak is a stark reminder of the financial power shift in League One. Gone are the days when modestly funded clubs could realistically compete at the top without significant investment. The January window showed that teams with financial backing—like Wrexham, Wycombe, and Huddersfield—are operating at a level that leaves clubs like Lincoln playing catch-up.

Jez George’s frustration is entirely justified. The Imps have prided themselves on smart recruitment and gradual squad building, but when transfer targets are lured away by significantly bigger pay packets, it makes their task increasingly difficult.
