Bristol Rovers have been forced into a goalkeeping reshuffle following West Bromwich Albion’s decision to recall Josh Griffiths from his loan spell at the Memorial Stadium.
In response, Rovers have recalled Jed Ward from his loan stint at Forest Green Rovers to fill the void left by Griffiths’ departure.
Josh Griffiths Recall
Griffiths, 23, had been a standout performer for Bristol Rovers during the first half of the League One season. The shot-stopper led the division in saves, making 110 stops in total, significantly outpacing his rivals in this statistic. However, with Albion selling first-choice goalkeeper Alex Palmer to Ipswich Town in a reported £5 million deal, the Championship club has opted to bring Griffiths back to The Hawthorns to provide competition for the number one spot.
Griffiths’ return to his parent club is a significant blow for Bristol Rovers, who had benefited from his commanding performances between the posts. The Hereford-born goalkeeper previously stated his ambition to become West Brom’s first-choice keeper, and this recall provides him with a chance to stake his claim.

Jed Ward Recall
In response to Griffiths’ recall, Bristol Rovers have swiftly moved to bring back their own academy graduate, Ward, from his loan spell at Forest Green Rovers. The 21-year-old had been sent out to gain experience in the National League but will now return to compete for the starting spot at the Gas.
Ward, who was named Rovers’ Young Player of the Year last season, had already gained significant first-team experience before his temporary move. Last season, he made 18 league appearances for Rovers after being recalled from a loan spell at Wealdstone, where he impressed. His return to the fold provides a measure of stability, though he will have a challenge on his hands stepping into the void left by Griffiths.
Writer’s View
The timing of Griffiths’ departure is less than ideal for Bristol Rovers, particularly given their current league position and reliance on his shot-stopping abilities. However, Ward’s return offers a silver lining, as he is a talented young goalkeeper who has already proven himself in League One. The key question now is whether Rovers will look to strengthen their goalkeeping department further or place their faith in Ward for the remainder of the season.
