West Bromwich Albion Agree To Goalkeeper Sale

West Bromwich Albion have agreed to sell Alex Palmer to Ipswich Town according to reports.

The 28-year-old has been at the club for his entire professional career and finally stepped up to become the first-choice option between the sticks in 2022.

Tractor Boys Agree Deal

According to Paul Gilmour of Sky Sports News, Ipswich have agreed a deal with West Bromwich Albion in the region of £2 million to sell their number one keeper. Kieran McKenna has been switching their starting goalkeepers in recent weeks amongst a few mistakes from former Burnley goalkeeper Aro Muric in the league.

Palmer has kept 11 clean sheets this season for The Baggies, putting him fourth in the Golden Glove race behind James Trafford, Leeds United‘s Iilan Meslier and Sheffield United‘s Michael Cooper. The move to Suffolk gives him a chance to play Premier League football for the first time in his career.

The fee has been disputed, with the Express & Star reporting a £5 million deal, with Palmer heading to Portman Road for his medical today. They understand that Tony Mowbray will not sign a replacement and will instead recall Josh Griffiths from Bristol Rovers to become his successor in goal.

Writer’s View

Kieran McKenna’s patience has worn thin with Aro Muric and an error in the save for Southampton’s first goal seems to have been the final straw for the Kosovan. Moves for the keepers in the top three of the Championship would never have been allowed so they have gone for the best available choice in the second tier and that is Alex Palmer. A consistent performer, he is just what Ipswich need between the sticks amid their relegation battle. The knock-on effect means the biggest losers in the move are Bristol Rovers, who will now need to scramble for the rest of this window to find a new goalkeeper as they lose Josh Griffiths.
