Portsmouth Remain In Relegation Trouble After Home Defeat

Mihailo Ivanovic’s well-taken first-half goal proved decisive as Millwall edged Portsmouth 1-0 at Fratton Park, securing back-to-back away wins for the Lions.

The Serbian forward’s composed finish lifted Millwall to 14th place in the championship table, while Portsmouth remained just two points above the relegation zone.

Millwall’s Defensive Resilience Pays Off

The match, rescheduled from November due to a floodlight failure, saw a competitive start with both sides fashioning early chances. Millwall’s Ra’ees Bangura-Williams squandered a golden opportunity in the 15th minute, side-footing his shot wide after a swift counter-attack.

Portsmouth responded with a promising attack of their own as Josh Murphy’s low cross found Colby Bishop, but the striker failed to connect cleanly. The loose ball fell to Matt Ritchie, whose powerful drive was bravely blocked by Joe Bryan.

It was Millwall who found the breakthrough in the 40th minute with a well-worked goal. Bangura-Williams threaded a precise pass behind the Portsmouth defence, allowing Ivanovic to run onto it. With goalkeeper Nicolas Schmid rushing off his line, Ivanovic kept his cool and expertly chipped the ball over him, watching as it rolled into the net to spark jubilant celebrations from the away fans.

Portsmouth Push, But Millwall Hold Firm

The hosts came out with attacking intent in the second half, pressing Millwall deep into their own territory. Murphy remained a constant threat down the left, delivering several dangerous crosses, one of which saw Ritchie head narrowly wide.

Millwall’s best second-half chance fell to Aaron Connolly, who curled an effort just wide from the edge of the area. Despite Pompey’s late pressure, including a flurry of long throws into the box, Millwall’s disciplined defensive display ensured they saw out the win.

“I think it’s frustrating from several points of view. First off, we didn’t put the ball in the back of the net after some really good opportunities,” said Portsmouth boss John Mousinho. “Then we went a goal down to a side who know how to defend a 1-0 lead really well, which was disappointing because we were in control of the game.”

Writer’s View

Millwall’s ability to grind out results away from home is proving vital as they continue their rise up the table. Ivanovic’s composed finish showcased his quality, while the Lions’ defensive organisation frustrated Portsmouth throughout. For Pompey, this defeat ends their impressive home run and raises concerns about their ability to convert chances. With the relegation battle tightening, they must rediscover their cutting edge sooner rather than later.
