Derby County have expressed interest in signing Middlesbrough midfielder Dan Barlaser, with the Rams lodging an enquiry about his availability ahead of the January transfer window deadline.
Darren Witcoop reported on X that Middlesbrough are open to letting the 28-year-old leave this month.
Barlaser Reunited with Warne?
Barlaser has a strong connection with Derby manager Paul Warne, having played under him at Rotherham United. During his time with the Millers, the midfielder made over 100 appearances and established himself as a key player. Warne may see him as the ideal candidate to strengthen Derby’s midfield as the club looks to move away from the relegation zone.

This season, Barlaser has featured 22 times for Middlesbrough, including 19 league appearances, contributing one goal and one assist. Despite his contributions, Middlesbrough are reportedly willing to let him go, with interest also coming from another unnamed League One club. The midfielder remains under contract at the Riverside Stadium until 2026, giving Boro some leverage in negotiations.
“Dan is a player who I’ve had an eye on for a while, and we’re delighted to bring him in. He is a perfect fit for us, not only in terms of attributes and what he can bring on the pitch but also character and desire to improve,” Middlesbrough head coach Michael Carrick said upon signing Barlaser in January 2023.

Strengthening Derby’s Midfield
Adding Barlaser to the squad would bolster Derby’s midfield options, providing depth and competition in a crucial area. With the team’s recent dip in form and their current fight to avoid relegation, his experience and familiarity with Warne’s system could prove invaluable.
Barlaser’s journey began in Newcastle United’s academy, where he progressed to make three senior appearances. He gained valuable experience on loan at Crewe Alexandra, Accrington Stanley, and Rotherham United before signing permanently with the latter in 2020. He joined Middlesbrough in January 2023, making 75 appearances in total for the Championship side.

A potential move to Derby County offers Dan Barlaser the chance to reunite with Paul Warne and make a significant impact at Pride Park. With Derby battling to improve their league position, securing a proven midfielder with Championship experience could be a game-changer. The challenge for the Rams will be finalising a deal that suits both clubs before the transfer window closes.
