West Bromwich Albion celebrated Tony Mowbray’s return to the Hawthorns with a resounding 5-1 victory over Portsmouth.
In a dominant display, Albion scored four first-half goals, leaving John Mousinho’s struggling side with little hope of recovery.
First-Half Blitz
Albion started strongly after a brief scare from Portsmouth, who saw Andre Dozzell’s early effort well saved. West Brom responded with authority as Alex Mowatt opened the scoring with a powerful low drive that eluded Nicholas Schmid in the Portsmouth goal. The midfielder’s strike set the tone for what was to come.
Grady Diangana capitalised on a rebound to double Albion’s lead, and captain Jed Wallace made it three with a composed finish after Diangana’s assist. The relentless pressure continued, with Diangana adding a fourth just before the break, expertly finishing a pass from Mason Holgate.

Swift Seals the Deal
In the second half, John Swift added further gloss to the scoreline with a long-range effort that found the net via a deflection. Albion nearly added a sixth when Tom Fellows was played through one-on-one but failed to convert. Despite the dominance, Portsmouth salvaged a consolation goal with the final kick of the game, as debutant Thomas Waddingham scored on his second attempt following a low cross.
Mowbray’s Influence
“The first 20 minutes we were under the cosh, but once we got the first goal, it unleashed us. Our two wide players were so good today. I don’t have an ego about my tactics—if I give these talented players space to express themselves, we can win a lot of matches,” said Mowbray to BBC Radio WM.
League Standings and Portsmouth’s Woes
The victory lifted West Bromwich Albion to fifth place in the Championship table, benefiting from defeats for Middlesbrough and Blackburn Rovers. In stark contrast, Portsmouth’s away struggles continued as they dropped to 21st, just two points above the relegation zone.
Writer’s View
West Brom’s scintillating performance underlined the impact Tony Mowbray has had in reigniting the team’s attacking flair. With key players like Diangana and Wallace stepping up, the Baggies appear poised for a strong promotion push. For Portsmouth, the defeat highlighted defensive frailties and an urgent need to turn their form around to avoid being dragged further into the relegation battle.
