Lincoln City Thrash Peterborough United To Boost Play-Off Hopes

Lincoln City roared into play-off contention with an emphatic 5-1 victory over a beleaguered Peterborough United.

The Imps, who had managed just one goal in their previous 468 minutes of league action, produced a clinical display to close the gap to the top six to just four points.

Imps Start Strong

Michael Skubala’s side wasted no time in asserting their dominance. Dom Jefferies opened the scoring in the 12th minute, slotting home after a Tom Bayliss free-kick caused havoc in the Posh defence. It set the tone for what would become a torrid afternoon for the visitors.

Bayliss doubled the lead just after the half-hour mark with a spectacular curling free-kick, having narrowly missed moments earlier. The midfielder’s sublime strike gave Lincoln a comfortable cushion as they headed into halftime.

Draper and Hamilton Add to the Tally

Lincoln continued to pile on the pressure in the second half. Freddie Draper calmly converted a penalty, sending goalkeeper Nicholas Bilokapic the wrong way to make it 3-0. The spot-kick came after persistent pressure from the hosts forced a defensive error.

Peterborough’s Ricky-Jade Jones offered a glimmer of hope for the visitors, pulling one back with a well-taken finish on the hour mark. However, Lincoln restored their three-goal advantage almost immediately. Substitute Ethan Hamilton’s first touch led to a deflected strike off Cian Hayes, adding another to the tally.

Collins Seals the Rout

James Collins, making his debut for Lincoln, capped off the scoring with a delightful finish in the 83rd minute. The forward latched onto a perfectly weighted pass from Jovon Makama and coolly dinked his shot past the goalkeeper, putting the final gloss on a dominant performance.

The result was the Imps’ first win against their rivals since 2020. While there’s no real geographical rivalry between the two sides, the game is often perceived as a derby of sorts due to the high number of players Peterborough have taken from Lincoln over the years.

It’s also the first time ever the Imps have put five past their rivals, and the tally is as many as they’ve scored collectively in the seven fixtures between their last win and this rout.

Play-Off Ambitions Alive

The resounding victory over Peterborough is a timely boost for the Imps, who are now firmly in the hunt for a play-off spot. Michael Skubala praised his team’s aggression and efficiency, noting the importance of maintaining momentum as the season progresses.

Writer’s View

Lincoln City’s stunning 5-1 triumph not only ends their scoring drought but also sends a clear message to their play-off rivals. The Imps demonstrated their attacking depth and resilience, qualities that could prove crucial as the race for the top six heats up. This performance could be the turning point in their campaign.
