Bolton Wanderers Considering Liverpool Legend For Top Job

Liverpool goal-scoring hero Robbie Fowler has emerged as a somewhat surprise candidate to replace Ian Evatt at Bolton Wanderers, as reported by Manchester World.

Wanderers sacked their promotion-winning manager with the club three points outside the playoffs in League One.

Fowler In The Frame

Following Evatt’s dismissal, it has been reported that former England international Fowler is in the frame to take the job at The Toughsheet Community Stadium.

The 49-year-old began his managerial journey in Thailand as player-manager of Muangthong United before returning to Liverpool in behind-the-scenes roles.

He would then jet off to the other side of the world to take the reins at the Australian side Brisbane Roar in 2019. In his 24 matches in charge of the Roar, Fowler managed 11 wins before resigning during the Covid-19 pandemic.

A less fruitful spell in India with East Bengal preceded a return to England to work in Oxford United’s coaching staff before again becoming a boss, this time in Saudi Arabia with Al-Qadsiah. Fowler’s nine-game spell in charge yielded six wins and two draws before he was surprisingly relieved of his duties after four months.

One Of Many Linked

Fowler’s name is believed to be one of a number under consideration by the Bolton board. The Manchester World report states that former boss and legendary figure Sam Allardyce could make a stunning return to a club he twice led into the UEFA Cup.

The former Rotherham United and Wigan Athletic boss Leam Richardson is another name said to be on the list. Richardson led Wigan to the League One title in the 2021-22 season before managing Rotherham in the Championship.

Fellow League One-winning boss Steven Schumacher is reportedly also in the frame for the job, having last managed Stoke City in the Championship after guiding Plymouth Argyle to the third-tier title.

Writer’s View

Robbie Fowler is a legendary figure in English football from his goal-laden playing days and has been willing to venture far and wide for opportunities in management but it will be a surprise to see Bolton opt for him above some of the other, more experienced names on their reported shortlist.
