Crewe Alexandra Take Clear Transfer Stance

Crewe Alexandra have turned down two bids from League Two rivals MK Dons for their captain, Mickey Demetriou.

The Railwaymen, who are firmly focused on securing promotion from League Two and currently sit in second place, 12 points behind leaders Walsall. However, it appears they have had to contend with serious interest from MK Dons for one of their key men.

Demetriou has been a vital player for Crewe, bringing not only defensive stability but also offensive contributions. In his debut season with the club, he made an impressive 55 appearances across all competitions, scoring 10 goals and providing six assists. His ability to contribute in both penalty areas has been a significant asset. This season, he has continued his consistent performances, featuring in 25 league matches and scoring once.

Crewe Instantly Dismiss MK Dons Approach

According to Football League World, Crewe have received two offers from their fourth tier rivals, which have both been dismissed outright. While the value of the bids have not been disclosed, it remains unclear if the Dons intend to return with an improved offer for the 34-year-old defender.

Demetriou’s contract is set to expire at the end of this season, following the conclusion of a two-year deal he signed after departing Newport County in 2023. This contract situation could make him an attractive target for other clubs as they seek experienced additions during the January transfer window.

Crewe’s recognise the importance of Demetriou’s leadership and on-field presence, especially as the team sits in a strong position to challenge for promotion. Allowing him to move to a direct rival like MK Dons could undermine their ambitions. The Dons, who sit 12th but also harbour promotion ambitions, are clearly seeking experienced reinforcements to strengthen their squad. However, Crewe appear resolute in their decision to retain their captain.

Writer’s View

From Crewe Alexandra’s perspective, rejecting bids for Demetriou is a wise decision. His influence both on and off the pitch has been invaluable in their promotion push. While his contract expiry poses a dilemma, losing such a crucial player could have far-reaching consequences for their season. Instead of focusing on short-term financial gain, the Railwaymen’s priority should remain on securing a top three finish, which would offer far greater long-term benefits. Demetriou’s experience and leadership make him an irreplaceable figure at this critical juncture.
