Sheffield United Close In On £800,000 Defender

Sheffield United are on the verge of completing a deal for Hertha Berlin defender Jonjoe Kenny after agreeing personal terms with the 27-year-old, according to journalist Fraser Fletcher.

The £800,000 transfer is expected to be finalised soon, adding to the Blades’ ambitious January transfer window.

Strengthening the Promotion Push

The Blades, currently second in the Championship, are looking to solidify their squad as they chase Leeds United at the top of the table. With Burnley and Sunderland also in pursuit, Sheffield United’s new owners are demonstrating their intent by backing manager Chris Wilder with multiple signings, including the recent acquisition of Ben Brereton Diaz.

Kenny’s transfer represents a bargain move, as his contract with Hertha Berlin was set to expire at the end of the season. Despite the modest fee, the former Everton player brings experience and versatility, making him a valuable addition to the squad.

Impressing in Germany

Kenny joined Hertha Berlin from Everton in 2022 and has since established himself as a reliable performer in the Bundesliga. In 62 appearances, he has contributed five goals and 14 assists, showcasing his attacking prowess from right-back. He has also displayed his versatility, playing as a wing-back and even filling in as a right-sided centre-back when needed.

Adding Bundesliga success to his Premier League experience makes Kenny a promising signing for the Blades. At such a low fee, the deal is seen as a shrewd piece of business as Sheffield United look to bolster their promotion push.

How Kenny Fits In

The arrival of Kenny adds further depth to Sheffield United’s defensive options. Alfie Gilchrist has been the preferred choice at right-back since joining on loan from Chelsea, but his ability to play as a centre-back might see him shift to cover the injured Harry Souttar. Other options include Femi Seriki and the versatile Jamie Shackleton.

It remains to be seen if Kenny will slot straight into the starting XI, but his pedigree and recent form in Germany suggest he will be pushing for a key role as the Blades aim to secure automatic promotion.

Writer’s View

Jonjoe Kenny’s move to Sheffield United looks like a coup for the club. Securing a player of his experience and versatility for just £800,000 is excellent business, particularly given his success in the Bundesliga and previous Premier League exposure. Kenny’s ability to contribute both defensively and offensively will provide Chris Wilder with tactical flexibility. As Sheffield United look to strengthen their hold on a top-two spot, Kenny’s addition could prove pivotal.
