Barrow Make Managerial Announcement

Barrow AFC have confirmed the appointment of Andy Whing as their new head coach following the departure of Stephen Clemence.

Whing, 40, joins the club on a two-and-a-half-year deal, with the Bluebirds paying an undisclosed fee to Solihull Moors to secure his services.

Whing Steps In to Steady the Ship

Whing takes the reins at Holker Street at a challenging time for Barrow, who sit 17th in League Two. The team has managed just one win in their last 15 matches, leaving them eight points above the relegation zone. Clemence’s sacking followed a 2-0 defeat to Swindon Town on Saturday, a result that prompted the club’s board to act decisively.

The former Coventry City, Brighton & Hove Albion, and Oxford United defender arrives with an impressive managerial pedigree. At Solihull Moors, he led the team to last season’s National League play-off final, where they suffered a narrow defeat to Bromley, and to the FA Trophy final at Wembley, where they were edged out by Gateshead. Solihull currently sit seventh in the National League under his stewardship.

Speaking on his appointment, Whing said:

“It’s a fantastic opportunity for me. I’m really, really excited to be here. As soon as I heard about the interest, I was really excited about it, and after meeting everyone today and having a real warm welcome, it just feels like I’ve got a bunch of really good people, which is brilliant.”

Plans for Connection and Change

Whing has emphasised the importance of building a connection with the fans as a cornerstone of his approach. He added:

“One of the biggest things for me is trying to get that connection with the fans as it’s a massive, massive part of it. If you look at my Banbury days and at Solihull, and even my playing days, I think I had a massive connection with every club I’ve been at.”

Barrow’s decision to bring in Whing reflects their ambition to move away from the lower reaches of the table and reignite their season. His attacking philosophy, demonstrated by Solihull’s 45 league goals this season, offers hope to a Barrow side that has struggled for goals, netting just 23 times in 25 games.

Writer’s View

Whing’s appointment is a bold and forward-thinking move by Barrow. His track record at Solihull Moors, where he achieved consistent play-off contention, suggests he can instill both discipline and attacking intent in a struggling side. However, the pressure will be on him to deliver results quickly, especially with Barrow’s precarious league position. Building a connection with the fans, as he has promised, will be key to generating the momentum needed to climb the table.
