Luton Town Boss Refuses To Be Drawn On Interest In £300,000 Player

Luton Town manager Matt Bloomfield has declined to address speculation linking his new club with Wycombe Wanderers striker Richard Kone.

The 21-year-old forward, who Bloomfield signed during his time at Wycombe, has been in prolific form this season, scoring 17 goals in all competitions.

Richard Kone Attention

Kone, valued at £300,000 by Transfermarkt, has attracted attention from several Championship clubs during the January transfer window, including Luton. However, Bloomfield remained tight-lipped about any potential interest, citing respect for his former employers.

“I think I made a comment a couple of weeks ago about other managers talking about my players and asking them not to, as I feel like it’s disrespectful,” Bloomfield said. “So, for respect, I shouldn’t talk about Wycombe’s players.”

Recruitment Strategy

The Hatters have already made moves in the January transfer window, including signing Isaiah Jones from Middlesbrough and selling Joe Taylor to Huddersfield Town. Bloomfield is now working with the club’s recruitment team to identify further targets.

“There’s a recruitment team that have already been working in the days, weeks, and months before I came—they were obviously doing their background work,” Bloomfield explained. “When you’re involved in football like I am, you always have players and people in mind who might help in different areas of the pitch.”

Balancing Act

Bloomfield stressed the importance of assessing the current squad while addressing recruitment priorities:

“We’ve got an idea of where we need to add, but it’s also about assessing and giving everyone an opportunity to play. Getting that balance right is crucial. There are already plans in place behind the scenes, which I really respect.”

With defender Erik Pieters leaving the club, Luton have one available squad spot to fill. Bloomfield said discussions are ongoing regarding whether additional players will need to leave to make room for further signings.

“It depends on how many we look to go after. There aren’t many places available right now, so it’s a continual conversation with the club and alignment with Gary [Sweet, CEO] and the recruitment staff to ensure we do what’s right for the club over the next few months.”

Writer’s View

Matt Bloomfield’s stance on transfer speculation highlights his respect for his former club and his professionalism in dealing with the challenges of a new managerial role. By focusing on his current squad and the work of the recruitment team, Bloomfield is clearly committed to ensuring Luton Town remain competitive in the Championship.

While links to Kone are intriguing, Bloomfield’s refusal to discuss the player emphasizes his belief in maintaining decorum and not unsettling players at other clubs. With the January window open and recruitment ongoing, it will be interesting to see how Bloomfield shapes his squad for the remainder of the season.
