Sutton United manager Steve Morison expressed his delight after his side secured a well-deserved 2-1 victory over York City in the National League on Saturday.
The win, driven by a brace from Will Davies, highlighted Sutton’s clinical execution of their game plan against one of the league’s promotion contenders.
Perfect Execution
Speaking after the match, Morison praised his team’s preparation and ability to adapt to York’s strengths.
“It went according to plan. I haven’t got enough words to use in my vocabulary to say how great they were,” Morison told club media.
Sutton took the lead in the first half when Davies headed home a precise corner from Lewis Simper. The striker doubled his tally shortly after with a thunderous finish from a counter-attack, giving Sutton a commanding advantage. Although York managed to pull a goal back late on due to a defensive lapse, Sutton held firm to secure the three points.
Morison credited York for their strong season, noting their deserved position in the league. He also acknowledged the challenging atmosphere at York’s home ground, saying: “We’ve come away, a big crowd that gets behind them when they’re on top, but also gets onto them when they’re not. We had to play on that, and to a man, the lads were fantastic.”
Davies Shines Again
Will Davies continued his impressive form with two vital goals that sealed the win for Sutton. The striker’s performance drew high praise from Morison, who described him as a “good player” in a “rich vein of form.”
“He’s been fantastic. That’s 11 or 12 for the season,” Morison said. “He’s having his best season with us, and he’s a good player. I had to take him off because he said his legs had gone – and I haven’t heard him say that this year!”
Davies’ clinical finishing has been a key asset for Sutton this season, and his contributions on Saturday once again underlined his importance to the team’s success.
Writer’s View
Sutton United’s win over York City was a testament to their tactical discipline and preparation under Steve Morison. The manager’s ability to craft a game plan that nullified York’s strengths while capitalising on Sutton’s attacking opportunities was pivotal. Will Davies’ brace not only showcased his form but also highlighted the team’s ability to deliver in high-pressure situations. With this victory, Sutton continue to build momentum in their National League campaign. If they maintain this level of performance, they could emerge as strong contenders in the race for promotion.
