Leyton Orient To Pip League One Rival To Top Target

Leyton Orient are reportedly on the brink of securing Swansea City midfielder Azeem Abdulai, beating League One rivals Mansfield Town to his signature.

According to journalist Darren Witcoop, the O’s are poised to bring the 22-year-old to London as the January transfer window enters its final stages.

Abdulai’s Move to Bolster Orient’s Midfield

Abdulai has made 20 appearances for Swansea this season, including 17 in the Championship, scoring twice. Leyton Orient appear eager to add his versatility and energy to their midfield as they aim to strengthen their squad for a push towards the League One play-offs. Richie Wellens’ side currently sit eighth in the table, just three points outside the top six following their recent draw with Peterborough United.

While it remains unclear whether the move will be a permanent deal or a loan, Abdulai’s arrival is expected to add competition and depth to Orient’s midfield options. His contract with Swansea runs until the summer of 2026, but the opportunity for more regular football may have motivated the Glasgow-born midfielder to consider a switch.

Abdulai’s Journey So Far

The 22-year-old began his career in Celtic’s academy, spending seven years honing his skills before moving south to join Leicester City in 2019. After a year with the Foxes, he signed with Swansea City in 2021 and has since made steady progress, including 11 appearances in previous campaigns before becoming a more regular feature this season.

Abdulai expressed his gratitude to Swansea when he signed a new deal in November 2024. Speaking to the club’s official website at the time, he said:

“The opportunity to extend my time here shows that I’m doing something well and that the staff have belief in me. Looking forward, I can now set myself longer-term goals at the club with my extension and I can start working towards those with the staff, who have been amazing since I arrived.”

Despite his commitment to Swansea, the prospect of more consistent first-team action may be too tempting to pass up, especially at a club like Leyton Orient, who are chasing promotion this season.

Writer’s View

Azeem Abdulai’s potential move to Leyton Orient could prove to be a masterstroke for both the player and the club. For Abdulai, it offers a chance to secure regular game time, something he has struggled to achieve at Swansea City in the highly competitive Championship. From Leyton Orient’s perspective, Abdulai’s blend of technical ability and Championship pedigree adds a much-needed layer of quality and depth to their midfield.
