Coventry City manager Frank Lampard has confirmed that free agent Jamie Paterson is currently training with the Sky Blues.
The 33-year-old forward, who hails from Coventry, is training to maintain his fitness while searching for a new club.
Mutually Beneficial Arrangement
Paterson, who started his career with Walsall, has a wealth of Championship experience, having played for clubs such as Nottingham Forest, Bristol City, and Swansea City. His most recent stint was in the MLS with Charlotte FC, under his former Walsall boss Dean Smith. However, after deciding not to extend his stay in the United States, Paterson has returned to England and is now back in the Midlands.
“I know Jamie from coming up against him when I was at Derby, and he was at Bristol. He’s a Coventry lad, as I think a lot of people know, and he’s local to us. He hasn’t got a club at the minute,” Lampard said. “It’s a good experience, we’re helping him to come and get fit and train. Our squad is a little bit stretched at this current moment so I think it helps us too. We are helping each other a little bit in the short-term and that’s it. It’s just training for the moment.”
While Lampard has described the arrangement as mutually beneficial, he emphasised that it remains a training-only agreement with no discussions of a contract offer at this stage.

Local Talent Back Home
Paterson was born in Coventry, but started his journey at Walsall, where he racked up 15 goals in 94 league games before moving to Nottingham Forest in 2013. At Forest, he made an impact with nine goals in 55 games and had a solid loan spell at Huddersfield Town, netting six in 34 matches.
Paterson enjoyed a successful stint at Bristol City, scoring 23 goals in 145 appearances. He also spent time at Derby County on loan and joined Swansea City in 2021, adding 16 goals to his tally over 105 games. Recently, he played for Charlotte FC but left at the end of the 2024 season. He is currently a free agent, but could well be a Sky Blue before too long.
Writer’s View
Jamie Paterson’s presence at Coventry City, even temporarily, is an intriguing development. His vast Championship experience and local ties make him an appealing option should the Sky Blues consider bolstering their squad. For now, his training stint provides both fitness for the player and depth for Lampard’s squad as they navigate a challenging Championship campaign.
