Bid Rejected In Middlesbrough Defender Pursuit

Middlesbrough‘s plan to make George Edmundson’s loan move permanent have hit a snag after Ipswich Town has hit a snag.

The 27-year-old was sent to the North-East this summer upon The Tractor Boys’ promotion to the Premier League and has played 20 times so far for Michael Carrick’s side.

According to a report from Pete O’Rourke in Football Insider, Ipswich Town have turned down a bid from Boro to sign Edmundson permanently. The former Derby County loanee has only made a total of 39 appearances in the second tier, with only 10 during Town’s promotion season as Luke Woolfenden and Cameron Burgess being Kieran McKenna’s preferred options.

The Northern Echo has since followed up on the story, confirming that talks are set to continue between the two clubs.

The 27-year-old joined Ipswich Town in 2021 from Rangers, during the Suffolk club’s time in League One, and has made 75 appearances for Kieran McKenna’s side, including a substitute appearance in their Premier League game against Manchester City this season. His contract expires at the end of this season.

He arrived at the club as their only centre-back signing of the summer transfer window, after losing Paddy McNair to San Diego FC on a free transfer. Other Boro defenders have been targets in transfers this season, with Rav Van Den Berg a target for Crystal Palace over the past month and also was scouted by Aston Villa and Wolverhampton Wanderers.

It does feel like a strange move for Ipswich Town to turn down an offer for George Edmundson with the chance to make some money on the player as his contract winds down. The only plausible reason would be that Middlesbrough have not met their valuation. Either way, Boro are hoping to seal a permanent move for someone who has become a very dependable option for their side. Even if this bid fails, they should have a strong chance to make a move in the summer as his contract expires at Portman Road.
