Middlesbrough Linked With Move For 24-Year-Old

Middlesbrough are reportedly reigniting their interest in Hull City left-back Ryan Giles, with the Championship club keen to bring him back to the Riverside Stadium this January.

According to HullLive, Giles is on Boro’s radar once again, having been linked with a move last summer that failed to materialise. Giles, 24, joined Hull City permanently from Luton Town in June 2024 after an initial loan spell, but the move has not gone as planned.

Despite being signed for a significant fee—reported to be £4.5 million—the left-back has struggled to make an impact, falling in and out of the Tigers’ starting XI. His defensive performances have been inconsistent, raising questions about his long-term fit at the MKM Stadium.

With his contract running until 2027, Hull City are reportedly prepared to let Giles leave and have already identified Celtic’s Greg Taylor as a potential replacement.

A Familiar Face for Middlesbrough

Giles is no stranger to Middlesbrough, having spent the 2022/23 season on loan at the club. During his time at the Riverside, he played a pivotal role in their play-off push, making 45 league appearances. Although Coventry City ultimately beat Boro in the semi-finals, Giles’ attacking contributions from left-back were a key part of their campaign.

He developed through the Wolverhampton Wanderers academy, earning recognition as the Academy Player of the Year for the 2017–18 season. Giles gained valuable experience through multiple loan spells at clubs including Shrewsbury Town, Coventry City, Cardiff City, and Middlesbrough. In 2023, he joined Luton Town in the Premier League before moving on loan to Hull City in January 2024, where he later secured a permanent move and continues to thrive.

Hull initially brought Giles in on loan 12 months ago, with former boss Liam Rosenior describing him as “a top full-back at this level” and praising his balance, attacking threat, and technical ability. However, the move to Hull has not panned out as expected, and a switch back to Middlesbrough could provide the player with an opportunity to revive his career.

Writer’s View

For all parties involved, a move for Ryan Giles could make perfect sense. Middlesbrough would be acquiring a player already familiar with their system and capable of adding attacking width, while Giles himself could benefit from a fresh start after a frustrating stint at Hull. For the Tigers, offloading a player who hasn’t lived up to his price tag allows them to reinvest in a more defensively reliable option like Greg Taylor.
