Leicester City boss Ruud van Nistelrooy has admitted that he is still keeping a close eye on Tom Cannon’s situation amid speculation the striker could be recalled from his season-long loan with Stoke City.
The 22-year-old joined the Potters last August for the remainder of the campaign in search of first team football. His time at the bet365 Stadium has been a success thus far, scoring 11 times in all competitions. This included a four-goal haul in the 6-1 win over Portsmouth in October, whilst he also found the net in the 2-1 FA Cup third round win against Sunderland last weekend.
News emerged last night that Stoke had triggered the clause to recall attacker Nathan Lowe from his season-long deal with League Two leaders Walsall. The 19-year-old has enjoyed an excellent first half of the campaign with the Saddlers, hitting 15 goals in 22 league outings.
Leicester Still Undecided On Cannon Future
The decision to bring Lowe back to Stoke has led to speculation that Cannon could be set to return to Leicester. The Republic of Ireland international has reportedly attracted the interest of Championship duo Sheffield United and Sunderland.
The Foxes, who are in danger of suffering an immediate relegation from the Premier League, host Crystal Palace on Wednesday night. Speaking to the media, via Leicester Live, ahead of the game, head coach van Nistelrooy said:
“He’s (Cannon) one on the list for us. We keep a close eye on him. Tom’s situation is closely assessed. There are decisions to be made on that. It’s still a possibility (he stays at Stoke). But we’re looking at what is best for his situation and what is best for the club.”
Writer’s View
Losing Cannon this month would be a bitter blow for Stoke, who have struggled in front of goal in recent weeks. Aside from their FA Cup win at the weekend, the Potters have scored just one goal in their last five. The last thing they need is to lose their top scorer, although they may have found a ready-made replacement in Nathan Lowe. The teenager has been in electric form for Walsall and if he can reciprocate that in the Championship, it may be a blessing in disguise for Mark Robins.
