Our Three Predictions for Plymouth Argyle vs Oxford United
- First Prediction: Oxford United to win – 17/10
- Second Prediction: Over 1.5 goals to be scored – 1/4
- Third Prediction: Morgan Whittaker to score at any time – 9/4
First Prediction for Plymouth Argyle vs Oxford United – Oxford United to win – 17/10
Whilst the sides had contradicting FA Cup success last weekend, Plymouth Argyle are still sat rock bottom of the Championship after a poor start to the season. New manager Milon Muslic was announced as the new manager just a few days ago, with that man needing to revitalise Argyle completely if they are to remain in the second tier of English football this season. The same coincidentally has happened at Oxford, with new boss Gary Rowett grinding results out and having a ‘new manager bounce’. Despite their defeat at the hands of League One Exeter City on Saturday, they are unbeaten in four in the league and picked up their first away win at Millwall on New Year’s Day. Although this clash is important for both sides, with their recent league form, the U’s are the favourites for this one.
Second Prediction for Plymouth Argyle vs Oxford United – Over 1.5 goals to be scored – 1/4
The hosts have the worst defensive record in the Championship this season. Despite playing 25 games, they have conceded 53 goals, which is 12 goals worse than anyone else in the division. Oxford have the joint third-worst defensive record, conceding 40 goals in 25 games. On average per game, Argyle concede 2.12 goals per game, whilst the Yellows’ record currently sits at 1.60 goals conceded per game. Both sides don’t have the greatest record in front of goal, however, with their awful defensive records you’d expect to see goals in this match.
Third Prediction for Plymouth Argyle vs Oxford United – Morgan Whittaker to score at any time – 9/4
Morgan Whittaker is Plymouth’s joint top scorer in the league with three goals. Despite missing a month out through injury, he’s still level with Andre Gray and Ibrahim Cissoko. The 24-year-old is no doubt one of the best wingers in the Championship and was Argyle’s record signing back in 2023. He has only returned from injury since December 29th, yet has already participated in four matches during this period. Whittaker provided the all-important goal last weekend which sent his team through to the FA Cup fourth round as they beat Premier League side Brentford away from home. With the 24-year-old now back amongst the goals, he’ll be confident in himself to score a few more against a defensively week Oxford side on Tuesday.

Full Preview of the Game – Last Results and Head-To-Head
As mentioned above, both sides come into this match in inconsistent form. The hosts have only won once in their last five against a Premier League side in Brentford, and the away side has won three, yet lost to League One opposition last weekend. Argyle will be looking to win back-to-back matches for the first time this season, while Oxford will be looking to extend their unbeaten run in the league to five matches.
It’s no secret that three points for either team will be very crucial, with Plymouth looking to get out of the relegation zone. Depending on other results around the grounds, the side now managed by Muslic could move up to 22nd and within touching distance of the safety zone. The U’s on the other hand, could extend the gap from themselves to the relegation zone to 11 points.
Since 2011, these sides have met each other a whopping 23 times, but this is only their meeting in the Championship. The sides met just before the New Year, with Oxford coming out as 2-0 winners thanks to goals from Ciaron Brown and Przemyslaw Placheta. Rowett’s side have won the majority of these ties throughout the years, winning 12 of the 23, with Argyle winning seven times and the last four ties ending in draws.
