Kalvin Phillips scored his first goal for Ipswich Town as the Premier League side comfortably defeated League One’s Bristol Rovers 3-0 to secure their place in the FA Cup fourth round.
Dominant First Half from Ipswich
The on-loan Manchester City midfielder opened the scoring in the 18th minute with a superb strike into the bottom corner after turning on Jack Clarke’s pass. Clarke then doubled Ipswich’s lead just six minutes later, netting his first goal for the club since joining from Sunderland in the summer.
Jack Taylor added a third before half-time, slotting past Rovers’ goalkeeper Josh Griffiths with ease. Despite suspicions of offside, with no VAR available for the FA Cup’s third round, the goal stood and left Ipswich in total control.
The Tractor Boys missed a chance to make it 4-0 early in the second half when Ali Al-Hamadi dragged his penalty wide after a handball by former Ipswich player Grant Ward.
Goalkeeper Arijanet Muric nearly gifted Bristol Rovers a goal after a misplaced pass landed at the feet of Ruel Sotiriou, but the Kosovan made amends with a leg save to keep the visitors out. Despite a spirited defensive effort in the second half, Rovers were unable to threaten Ipswich’s commanding lead.
Calderón Reflects on Tough Defeat
Rovers manager Iñigo Calderón acknowledged the gap in quality between the two sides. Speaking to BRTV after the match, the former Brighton defender admitted his team struggled to adapt to the Premier League opposition.
“I am disappointed, especially in the first half,” Calderón said. “We did not start well enough with or without the ball. It’s a big difference – that’s why they play where they play, and that’s why we play where we play.”
However, Calderón found positives in his team’s progress.
“I am seeing progress in the team. Today was probably not fair to evaluate how we are because the opposition is not near what we face next Saturday. But the process is going good. It’s a matter of time.”
Ipswich’s Focus Shifts Back to the Premier League
For Ipswich Town, the result marked a third consecutive unbeaten game across all competitions. Kieran McKenna’s side, currently in the Premier League relegation zone on goal difference, will now turn their attention to their next challenge as they host Brighton at Portman Road on Thursday.

For Bristol Rovers, this was always going to be a difficult challenge, but Iñigo Calderón’s post-match reflections highlight a long-term focus on progress rather than immediate results. The FA Cup provided a learning experience for the League One side, who must now regroup for their league campaign.
