Wycombe Wanderers Manager ‘Flattered’ By Speculation

Wycombe Wanderers boss Matt Bloomfield has spoken about the rumours linking him with the vacant Luton Town job, as reported by Luton Today.

Promotion-winning manager Rob Edwards left the club on Thursday after four successive defeats.

Bloomfield ‘Extremely Flattered’ By Interest

Matt Bloomfield was commenting on the speculation fresh from knocking Championship side Portsmouth out of the FA Cup on Friday day.

The 40-year-old is among the favourites for the vacant role at Kenilworth Road and admits to being ‘extremely flattered’ to have his name linked with a club in the Championship.

“I’m aware of the speculation because we all have friends who like to send us links to stuff and like to tell you.”

“I try to stay away from it all, so I’m not on social media, I don’t read anything but as I said at Wigan, it’s flattering to be linked with clubs higher up the food chain as it shows that as a football club we’re making progression.”

“It’s extremely flattering, that’s all I know, my focus was firmly on the job tonight.”

Bloomfield had been a player with the Chairboys for close to 20 years and made well over 500 appearances for the club. His first taste of management came at Colchester United before being chosen to replace outgoing Wycombe legend Gareth Ainsworth in February 2023.

Since his appointment, Bloomfield has taken charge of 107 matches and has won 51 of those. The Chairboys are keeping pace with the expected challengers at the top end of League One and sit second just two points behind Birmingham City albeit having played two more games.

His impressive record with Wanderers has led to speculation of a move up the pyramid.

Edwards Leaves Having Done The Impossible

Rob Edwards was appointed Luton manager in November 2022 after a short-lived spell as Watford boss. After taking over, he managed to achieve an unlikely playoff spot in the Championship and would ultimately take the unfancied Hatters to the top flight.

A difficult Premier League season followed, but the club did not disgrace themselves despite their relegation. The return to the Championship started poorly as the Hatters took just one point from their opening five matches.

Edwards leaves the club in 20th position in the Championship, just two points above the relegation places and with a record of 33 wins and 47 losses from his 103 games in charge.

Writer’s View

Interest in Bloomfield is hardly surprising. To have Wycombe challenging those teams with huge League One budgets is an incredible achievement.

Whether he will jump ship to a relegation battle remains to be seen. Perhaps a quick look at what befell his former manager after leaving Adams Park might persuade Bloomfield to stay put.
