Sunderland To Beat La Liga Side To €23 Million Target

Sunderland AFC has reportedly overtaken Real Betis in the race to sign Roma midfielder Enzo Le Fée.

The Championship side is aiming to secure the 23-year-old on a loan deal with an option to buy, contingent on achieving promotion this season.

Struggles in Serie A

Le Fée joined Roma from Rennes in July 2024 for €23 million but has struggled to establish himself in Italy. Since Claudio Ranieri took over as head coach, his playing opportunities have dwindled, with only six Serie A appearances this season. The lack of playing time has made the midfielder a target for clubs seeking to reinvigorate their midfield options.

Sunderland’s interest is driven by manager Régis Le Bris, who previously worked with Le Fée at Lorient. Le Bris is eager to reunite with the player, viewing him as a key piece in Sunderland’s push for promotion. The club, currently fourth in the Championship, is optimistic about completing a loan deal that could become permanent if they move up to the Premier League.

Real Betis Fall Behind

Real Betis had initially been in discussions with Roma to acquire Le Fée. However, recent reports suggest that the Spanish side has fallen behind Sunderland in the race for his signature. Betis, facing financial constraints, may struggle to match Sunderland’s offer, especially with the English club’s loan-to-buy proposal aligning with Roma’s valuation.

A Journey Through Europe

Le Fée began his career in Lorient’s youth academy, signing his first professional contract in 2018. He made his senior debut for Lorient in May 2019 and quickly became a standout player, earning a move to Rennes in July 2023. During his time at Rennes, Le Fée impressed in Ligue 1, making an impactful debut in a 5-1 victory over Metz.

In July 2024, he joined Roma on a five-year deal worth €23 million, but his time in Serie A has been underwhelming. Now, with interest from Sunderland and Betis, the midfielder has a chance to revive his career in a more suitable environment.

Writer’s View

Enzo Le Fée’s potential move to Sunderland could be a turning point for both the player and the club. Le Fée’s technical skills and connection with Régis Le Bris make him an ideal addition to Sunderland’s squad as they aim for promotion. For Roma, loaning out Le Fée provides an opportunity to either reignite his career or recoup their investment. With Real Betis seemingly outpaced, Sunderland holds the upper hand, but the situation remains fluid as the transfer window progresses.
