Queens Park Rangers Eyeing Move For 21-Year-Old Championship Striker

Queens Park Rangers are among several clubs reportedly vying for the services of Leeds United striker Joe Gelhardt.

The 21-year-old, who has struggled for game time this season, is expected to leave Elland Road on loan during the January transfer window to reignite his career.

Out of Favour at Leeds

Gelhardt, a former Wigan Athletic academy graduate, has found opportunities limited under Leeds boss Daniel Farke. He has made only three appearances this season, including a start in Leeds’ 3-0 Carabao Cup defeat to Middlesbrough in August and a brief substitute appearance in October’s 1-1 draw with Norwich City.

Speaking about the challenges of squad management, Farke said:

“Each player wants to play every second. You can only start 11 players. You have to be ready when your chance comes. Each and every player that is with us has my backing and my trust, and they have to be ready when the chance comes.”

Interest from Multiple Clubs

According to reports, QPR and Portsmouth are leading the race to secure Gelhardt’s signature, with Cardiff City, Derby County, Blackburn Rovers and Plymouth Argyle also expressing interest. The striker’s proven ability to make an impact in the Championship and League One has made him an attractive prospect for clubs looking to bolster their attacking options.

Gelhardt made his Premier League debut under Marcelo Bielsa, earning plaudits for his physical and fearless style of play. Former Tottenham Hotspur midfielder Jamie Redknapp once described him as a “human wrecking ball,” highlighting his aggression, pace, and confidence in the final third. Bielsa also praised Gelhardt’s ability to create danger, calling him “a player with the right tools to have an impact without any problems.”

QPR’s Transfer Ambitions

QPR manager Marti Cifuentes is actively seeking reinforcements as the club looks to strengthen during the transfer window. Speaking about the R’s strategy, Cifuentes said:

“We know how difficult it is, not only for QPR but for many clubs in this league. We might have an interest in trying, if possible, to improve our squad. We will continue to work in a calm way to try and get the best from the squad.”

Alongside Gelhardt, QPR have been linked with other high-profile targets, including Aston Villa’s Louie Barry, although Barry appears set to join Derby County.

Writer’s View

Joe Gelhardt’s potential loan move could provide the platform he needs to rediscover his form and confidence. His talent and aggressive playing style make him a valuable asset for any Championship or League One side. QPR and Portsmouth could be ideal destinations for Gelhardt to reignite his career.
