Bristol Rovers Set To Sign Former Wimbledon & Walsall Midfielder

Former AFC Wimbledon midfielder Romaine Sawyers is reportedly on the verge of signing with League One side Bristol Rovers, according to the South London Press.

The 33-year-old recently left Wimbledon after a short-term contract to “pursue a new challenge,” and now appears set to bolster the Gas’ squad.

Romaine Sawyers’ Club Career

Romaine Sawyers began his professional career at West Bromwich Albion, progressing through their youth ranks. Despite limited first-team opportunities, Sawyers went on to build a reputation as a creative and dependable midfielder during loan spells at Port Vale and Shrewsbury Town.

In 2013, he made a permanent move to Walsall, where he became a key player over three seasons, amassing 135 league appearances and scoring 16 goals. His performances at Walsall earned him a move to Brentford in the Championship, where he continued to impress, contributing three goals in 122 league appearances between 2016 and 2019.

Sawyers returned to West Brom in 2019, this time as a seasoned professional. He was an integral part of the team that secured promotion to the Premier League in the 2019-2020 season. Over two campaigns, he made 61 league appearances for the Baggies before joining Stoke City on loan in 2021, where he featured 42 times in all competitions.

In December 2024, Sawyers signed a one-month contract with AFC Wimbledon, making five appearances and scoring a goal in his final match, a 2-1 victory over Newport County.

Bolstering Bristol Rovers

Bristol Rovers, currently 20th in League One, are seeking reinforcements to steer clear of the relegation zone under new manager Inigo Calderon. Sawyers’ vast experience in both the Championship and League One is expected to provide a significant boost to the Gas’ midfield.

The Gas have faced significant changes recently, starting with the dismissal of manager Matt Taylor and assistant Wayne Carlisle after consecutive League One defeats. Lee Cattermole briefly stepped in as joint interim manager alongside David Horseman but departed just a week later, leaving Horseman in charge. These managerial shifts reflect ongoing instability as the club seeks to improve its League One standing.

On the pitch, Rovers’ winless streak at home continued in a match against Leyton Orient, which began with the odd spectacle of a dog delaying kick-off. Despite a spirited effort, they fell 2-1, leaving them precariously above the relegation zone.

Writer’s View

Romaine Sawyers’ signing is a smart move for Bristol Rovers. With nearly 400 senior appearances to his name, he brings a wealth of experience and leadership to a side fighting to avoid the drop. His ability to dictate play and contribute offensively should make an immediate impact in the Gas’ survival push.
