Doncaster Rovers manager Grant McCann has revealed they beat off competition to secure the signature of striker Rob Street on loan from Lincoln City earlier this week.
The 23-year-old only joined the Imps from Cheltenham Town in the summer but has struggled for opportunities at the LNER Stadium. He made just six League One appearances, all coming from the substitutes bench, and scored his only goal in a 5-0 rout of Manchester City under-21s in the EFL Trophy in November.
With the likes of Bailey Cadamarteri, Jovon Makama and Freddie Draper ahead of him in the pecking order, the decision was made to allow Street to depart on loan, with Doncaster acting swiftly to complete the deal. He made his debut as a half time substitute in yesterday’s 2-1 defeat against Port Vale, impressing new boss McCann.
Grant McCann Delighted With Street’s Arrival
Speaking to The Doncaster Free Press following yesterday’s game, McCann revealed he was delighted with his new attacker’s impact after only joining up with the club one day earlier:
“Rob was brilliant when he came on. I think the fans can see what he’ll bring. He gets in-behind and his positivity, his physicality and pace will be huge for us.
“I’m really pleased to get him. We had to fight off a bit of competition. He’ll add a different dimension to us, wherever he plays across that front three with his pace and energy. He’s really hungry to play and do well and he showed today what he’s about.”
The 44-year-old also confirmed that Doncaster are looking at bringing in another loanee this month:
“We’ll look to improve and we’re working hard on a certain position. There’s no news just yet, but we’re definitely working.
“We know the next target for us. We’re working very hard but there’s lots of moving parts in order for it to happen.”
Writer’s View
It’s perplexing as to why Rob Street wasn’t given more of an opportunity at Lincoln, especially with their current woes in front of goal. Still, it’s the second successive season that Doncaster have raided the Imps, having brought in Hakeeb Adelakun last January. McCann will be hoping that his latest arrival from the LNER Stadium will have a similar impact as he continues to chase promotion from League Two.
