Wigan Athletic Close In On Player Let Go By League One Rivals

Wigan Athletic are reportedly on the brink of securing their second signing of the January transfer window, with Joseph Hungbo set to join from German club Nurnberg.

The 24-year-old winger is poised to return to English football after spending the first half of the season on loan at Rotherham United.

A Rising Star Returns to English Football

Hungbo, a London-born talent who progressed through Crystal Palace’s youth system, gained prominence with Watford before heading to Germany in 2023. He has made an impression during his loan spell at Rotherham, where he accumulated 18 appearances in League One this season.

Millers boss Steve Evans revealed that Hungbo’s loan had been prematurely ended by Nurnberg, fuelling speculation about his next destination. Speaking to the Rotherham Advertiser, Evans shared insight into the player’s departure.

“He went back as of yesterday. He had a very emotional chat with me and the staff and the boys. He said how much he’d been frustrated but that he’d loved his time here. I think Nurnberg’s plan is to perhaps put him back in the UK.”

Wigan are believed to be leading the race for Hungbo’s signature. The Latics, who recently bolstered their defence with the acquisition of Josh Robinson from Arsenal, are keen to add attacking options to their squad. This move would follow a pattern, as Wigan successfully signed winger Silko Thomas last summer, beating Rotherham to the deal.

The potential deal for Hungbo would involve a six-figure fee, marking a significant investment by Wigan in their quest for League One success.

Joseph Hungbo

Hungbo started his career at Crystal Palace but never featured for the first team. In 2019, he was loaned to Margate, where he played nine games without scoring. Later that year, he joined Watford, making 12 appearances with no goals. He had loan stints at Aldershot Town (6 games, no goals), Ross County (33 games, seven goals), and Huddersfield Town (14 games, three goals). In 2023, he signed with 1. FC Nürnberg played 17 matches without scoring before his temporary switch to the Millers.

Writer’s View

Joseph Hungbo’s potential arrival at Wigan could provide the spark they need in their attacking line-up. His experience in both the Championship and League One demonstrates his ability to adapt to the demands of English football. If Wigan secure his signature, it could be a decisive move in their push for promotion. However, the pressure will be on Hungbo to hit the ground running and justify the investment.
