Rotherham United Loanee Set for Early Exit

Rotherham United are poised to bid farewell to one of their summer recruits, with German side FC Nuremberg set to recall forward Joseph Hungbo six months earlier than expected.

The news comes despite a crucial win against Lincoln City, highlighting a mixed start to the January transfer window for the Millers.

Why Didn’t Hungbo’s Move Work Out?

Hungbo, 24, was loaned to Rotherham with high hopes following a lacklustre spell in Germany, where he failed to score or assist in 17 appearances for FC Nuremberg during the 2023/24 campaign. The Millers hoped the forward could rediscover his form in League One.

Unfortunately, Hungbo struggled to make an impact. Despite 18 appearances in all competitions this season, he failed to register a single goal or assist. His last goal contribution dates back to May 2023 when he scored for Huddersfield Town against Reading. Hungbo’s inability to break into the starting XI consistently—managing just five league starts—suggests he struggled to win over manager Matt Taylor.

Who is Joseph Hungbo?

Hungbo began his career at Crystal Palace, making no first-team appearances. He was loaned to Margate in 2019, playing nine matches without scoring. After joining Watford in 2019, he made 12 appearances, scoring no goals. Loan spells followed at Aldershot Town (6 appearances, zero goals), Ross County (33 appearances, seven goals), and Huddersfield Town (14 appearances, three goals). In 2023, he moved to 1. FC Nürnberg, featuring in 17 matches without scoring. He joined Rotherham in the summer, but has started just five league matches, and hasn’t scored in a Millers’ shirt.

Do the Millers Need a Replacement?

On paper, Hungbo’s departure might not seem to demand immediate action, especially with Mallik Wilks still available. However, Rotherham’s season has been far from stellar. Averaging less than a goal per game and struggling to convert their 12.6 shots per match into results, the Millers find themselves under pressure to bolster their attack.

Writer’s View

Hungbo’s early departure underscores the risks of relying on unproven loanees to drive a promotion campaign. While his struggles may reflect more on his form than Rotherham’s recruitment, the Millers must act decisively to address their offensive woes. A dynamic January window could transform their season, but they must strike the right balance between short-term fixes and long-term strategy.
