Plymouth Argyle grabbed a late draw to hold Bristol City at Home Park despite going behind twice.
Managerless Argyle, under the stewardship of Kevin Nancekivell, grabbed a stoppage-time equaliser to keep themselves in touch at the bottom of the table.
Quiet First Half, Familiar Story For Argyle
Despite having the first opening, Argyle found themselves a goal down at the break at the end of a quiet opening 45 minutes.
The Pilgrims threatened early when Rami Al Hajj bent a shot from the edge of the area that was tipped away by Max O’Leary in the Bristol goal only for Ryan Hardie to blaze the rebound over the bar.
Just after the half-hour mark, the visitors were in front. Starting with O’Leary in goal, City played the ball quickly and neatly through the Plymouth midfield before sliding a ball through for Nakhi Wells to face the on-rushing home stopper Conor Hazard. Instead of taking the chance on himself, the experienced Wells rolled the ball to his left for Anis Mehmeti to strike into an empty net.
Second Half Comeback
Argyle could have 2-0 down and the game out of sight inside a minute of the restart had it not been for an excellent save from Hazard from a Wells volley eight yards out.
The Robins were left to rue that missed opportunity just four minutes later when the hosts found an equaliser. Argyle moved the ball nicely out to Morgan Whittaker on the right wing, and his chipped cross was side-footed into the net by Al Hajj.
It wasn’t long before Bristol City were back in front. Scott Twine’s ball around the corner found the third-man run, in this case Jason Knight who strode into the box and delicately dinked the ball over Hazard.
Plymouth was not done yet and managed to salvage a point thanks to Julio Pleguezuelo. A cross from the right was not at all dealt with by the Bristol City defence and the Spaniard pounced to flick the ball into the net to earn a point in the 91st minute.
Writer’s View
Coming from behind twice to salvage something from this game was huge for Argyle and keeps them in touch with those above them. For Bristol, this was a disappointing result and a missed opportunity to get within touching distance of the playoffs.
