Millwall Football Club appears to be closing in on appointing Alex Neil as their new manager, according to reports.
The 43-year-old Scotsman, who previously managed Stoke City, Sunderland, Preston North End, and Norwich City, has emerged as the frontrunner for the job following Neil Harris’s departure earlier this month.
The Lions, currently sitting 13th in the Championship table, have been evaluating several candidates. Wycombe Wanderers manager Matt Bloomfield and former Plymouth Argyle managers Ryan Lowe and Steven Schumacher were considered. However, Millwall’s management team has reportedly been most impressed by Neil’s track record and experience.
Why Alex Neil?
Neil’s extensive managerial experience, which includes 466 matches in charge across various leagues, makes him an appealing option. His highlights include guiding Norwich City to the Premier League and lifting Sunderland from League One during a period of unrest at the club. Millwall fans will recall his time with Stoke City, where he managed from 2022 to 2023.
Neil’s success in the Championship suggests he could be the steady presence Millwall needs to push into the top half of the table, especially after the club’s narrow 1-0 victory over Blackburn Rovers.
“He’s come in and done a terrific job. This is a big club, we all kept saying they’re too big to be in League One. Many managers tried to get them out, he’s done that…he’ll do well in the Championship,” said Clinton Morrison during Neil’s Sunderland tenure.
Millwall’s managerial decision is particularly crucial given the team’s next game is against Norwich City, one of Neil’s former clubs. Securing a leader with his calibre could galvanise the squad at this pivotal point in the season.
Writer’s View
Alex Neil is a sensible choice for Millwall. His history of revitalising clubs and delivering results in competitive leagues aligns well with the club’s ambitions. While younger candidates like Walsall’s Mat Sadler could bring fresh ideas, Neil’s proven track record offers stability. The Lions may benefit from his disciplined approach as they aim to climb the Championship standings and possibly push for a playoff spot.
