Lincoln City manager Michael Skubala has spoken about the challenges and strategies for reintegrating Tyler Walker and Tom Bayliss into the squad as the duo return from long injury absences.
Both players made their comebacks against Morecambe in the EFL Trophy earlier this month, but Skubala has stressed the importance of careful management to bring them back to full match sharpness.
Tyler Walker’s Journey Back
Tyler Walker’s return marks a significant step forward after a torrid spell with injuries. Since joining Lincoln from Coventry City in the summer of 2023, the forward has managed only six league appearances due to persistent fitness issues. Walker, who scored 14 goals in 26 starts during his first stint with the Imps, hasn’t found the net since March 2023.
“I think we know what Tyler can bring when he’s fully fit and match sharp,” said Skubala. “He’s very good in the box, can finish well, and has loads of attributes we like. It’s just about trying to get him on the pitch and getting him those match minutes.”
Skubala hinted that Walker could feature as a substitute against Reading this weekend, as the team looks to carefully ease him back into League One action.
Tom Bayliss: Another Step Forward
Midfielder Tom Bayliss also returned to action against Morecambe and has impressed in training since. Like Walker, Bayliss is not yet ready to play a full 90 minutes but could be an option from the bench in the upcoming match.
“He’s raring to go,” confirmed Skubala. “But they’re not both fit enough for 90 minutes or even 60. It’s about how we can utilise their expertise while building their match sharpness.”
The Challenge of Match Fitness
Skubala highlighted the difficulties of reintegrating injured players without a structured Under-21 or Under-23 program at the club. He noted that while competitions like the Vertu Trophy offer some opportunities for game time, the intense League One schedule leaves little room for additional friendlies.
“One of the challenges with injured players is how to get them match-ready without an Under-21 program. We have to think about how to get them on the pitch at the right moments while managing substitutions.”
Walker and Bayliss returning to the fold will undoubtedly strengthen Lincoln’s squad. While their timeline for starting matches remains uncertain, their availability on the bench is a promising sign. With the team navigating a busy period, the added depth could be crucial as the season progresses.
Writer’s View
The return of Tyler Walker and Tom Bayliss is a significant boost for Lincoln City, but the road back to full match fitness requires careful planning. Skubala’s challenge lies in balancing their reintegration with the team’s immediate needs. If managed well, their returns could add a new dimension to the squad, enhancing Lincoln’s push for success in League One.
