‘Everyone Wrote Us Off’ – Oxford United Captain Defiant Ahead of Leeds United Clash

Oxford United captain Elliott Moore has called for unity and resilience as the team prepares to face Leeds United amidst managerial upheaval and a fight to stay out of the Championship relegation zone.

Oxford’s Challenging Run

It has been a tough week for Oxford United, with head coach Des Buckingham sacked following a home loss to Sheffield Wednesday. The defeat marked a six-match winless streak and extended their poor form to just one win in 15 matches. The U’s now sit one point and two places above the relegation zone.

With Buckingham gone, first team assistants Craig Short and Chris Hackett, alongside goalkeeping coach Lewis Price, have taken temporary charge of the squad. They face a daunting task this weekend as they travel to second-placed Leeds United, who are on an eight-match winning streak at Elland Road.

Elliott Moore’s Rallying Cry

Despite the challenges, Moore remains defiant. Speaking about the upcoming fixture, he said: “It doesn’t really bother me in the way of negativity. Everyone wrote us off against Bolton in the play-off final, and look how that turned out. If people want to write us off, that’s fine. We’ll go out there with a game plan and stick to it.”

Moore added, “Leeds are a top team, and you have to respect them, but we’re not going to shy away. We want to come away with something from the game. Let’s put in a fight, put in a performance, and try to put some points on the board.”

Focus Amidst Turmoil

Moore acknowledged the difficulties posed by Buckingham’s departure, describing the situation as putting the team “into a bit of turmoil.” However, he emphasized the players’ responsibility to stay focused on the task at hand.

“It’s up to us now to just get our heads down and work, and take it to Leeds on Saturday. Whatever happens with a new manager will take care of itself,” Moore stated.

What’s Next for Oxford?

The club remains without a permanent manager, adding uncertainty to an already challenging campaign. A positive result against Leeds could provide a much-needed morale boost, but the odds appear stacked against them given Leeds’ form and Oxford’s struggles.

With the January transfer window looming, a new managerial appointment could also be crucial in shaping Oxford’s survival bid.

Oxford United’s resilience will be tested in the coming weeks. While Leeds represent a formidable challenge, Moore’s leadership and a united team effort could spark an unlikely result. However, a swift managerial appointment is essential to stabilize the club and guide them through this turbulent period.
