Shrewsbury Town manager Gareth Ainsworth has expressed interest in bringing Jason McCarthy to the club following the defender’s recent exit from Wycombe Wanderers.
McCarthy, 29, left Wycombe by mutual consent and is now considering his next move as a free agent.
A Familiar Face for Ainsworth
Ainsworth, who has managed McCarthy multiple times during his career, praised the defender’s professionalism and abilities. Speaking to the Shropshire Star, he said:
“Jason is a player I have worked with and signed three or four times at Wycombe. He is an outstanding professional… There is obviously an interest in Jason, but we will have to see where that goes.”
McCarthy, capable of playing as a right-back or centre-back, is seen as a potential solution to Shrewsbury’s defensive struggles. The Shrews currently sit bottom of the League One table after a challenging campaign and are looking to strengthen their squad in the January transfer window.
McCarthy’s Career Journey
Born in Southampton, McCarthy came through the academy ranks at his hometown club, featuring regularly at youth levels before making one senior appearance. During his development, he enjoyed loan spells at Wycombe Wanderers and Walsall, gaining valuable first-team experience.
In 2018, McCarthy joined Wycombe on a permanent basis after a stint at Barnsley. He later moved to Millwall but was reunited with Ainsworth in 2020, initially on loan before the move was made permanent. Over his time with Wycombe, he made 121 appearances and scored four goals, seven of those matches coming in the current campaign.
Announcing his departure from Wycombe, McCarthy said:
“It’s been a tough decision to come to, but I feel like it’s the right time to leave. The club is in amazing hands and it’s a really exciting time, but for me it’s time to step away and watch on as a fan.”
What’s Next for Shrewsbury?
Reuniting with McCarthy could provide a much-needed boost for Shrewsbury, who face a critical period in their fight to climb out of the relegation zone. Ainsworth will hope his familiarity with the player can help secure a deal to strengthen the squad’s defensive ranks.
The Shrews are preparing for a tough away fixture against Wigan Athletic this weekend, and adding a player of McCarthy’s calibre could be a key step in turning their season around.
Writer’s View
Jason McCarthy’s availability as a free agent presents a timely opportunity for Shrewsbury Town. His experience and versatility make him a valuable asset, especially under the guidance of Gareth Ainsworth, who knows how to get the best out of him. If a deal is struck, McCarthy could play a pivotal role in Shrewsbury’s survival bid this season.
