Southampton vs Coventry City: Prediction, Lineups & Odds (20/12/25)

Southampton will look to return to winning ways on Saturday when they welcome Championship leaders Coventry City to the St Mary’s Stadium.

Our Three Predictions For Southampton vs Coventry City

  • First Prediction: Southampton – Draw No Bet – 3/4
  • Second Prediction: Both Teams To Score – 40/85
  • Third Prediction: Over 2.5 Goals – 8/15

First Prediction For Southampton vs Coventry City – Southampton – Draw No Bet – 3/4

The departure of Will Still at the beginning of November has completely revitalised Southampton. After winning just twice in 13 league games under the guidance of the 33-year-old, they have now picked up 6 victories from 8 to move into the top half of the table.

The Saints did suffer a 2-1 loss at Norwich City at the weekend but have won all 4 of their home games under Tonda Eckert. Furthermore, they have scored 3 times in each of those outings, to show that they could be an outside bet for the play-off places.

Coventry continue to hold 5 point gap at the top of the Championship but they have seen that lead halved in recent weeks. A run of 5 successive wins came to an end with a second defeat of the season at Ipswich Town, and the Sky Blues followed that with a disappointing 1-1 draw at Preston North End.

Frank Lampard’s team recovered from their mini blip on Saturday to record a narrow 1-0 triumph over Bristol City, although their last two trips show that they are vulnerable on the road. Southampton will be looking to take advantage.

Second Prediction For Southampton vs Coventry City – Both Teams To Score – 40/85

It’s rare to see the odds for this market so low, but it’s easy to see why. No team has been involved in more games than Southampton where both teams have scored, with a staggering 81% of their fixtures achieving this feat.

Looking at Tonda Eckert’s 8-game reign, the 3-0 win over Leicester City is their only clean sheet. Furthermore, the Saints have scored in every outing in which he has taken charge to date.

Coventry’s goal scoring prowess has been well documented. The Sky Blues have scored an impressive 52 times in 21 games to date.

They may have faltered in recent weeks, scoring just twice in 3 outings, but they are still good value to find the net against a defence which has shipped 30 goals. Despite that, the 1-0 win over Bristol City at the weekend was their first clean sheet since before the last international break.

Third Prediction For Southampton vs Coventry City – Over 2.5 Goals – 8/15

Again, Southampton top the stats table for games involving 3 or more goals. 71% of their games to date have achieved this marker, which includes all 8 of Eckert’s results.

The Saints have hit 3 goals themselves in all of their last 4 home fixtures whilst also scoring 5 away at Charlton Athletic. The 2-1 loss at Norwich on Saturday was the first time they had failed to score twice since the departure of Will Still.

Coventry rank slightly lower than their hosts in this market, with 67% of their games being high scoring affairs. This has fallen in recent weeks though thanks to the draw with Preston and the narrow victory over Bristol City.

When taking into account just clashes away from the CBS Arena, Frank Lampard’s team see their percentage here increase to 73%. That is only bettered by Southampton and Hull City.

Full Preview Of The Game: Last Results And Head-To-Head:

Southampton look a completely different team to the one we saw at the beginning of the season. The change of guard has helped massively with that, with Will Still picking up just 2 wins in his short tenure.

Tonda Eckert took over on an interim basis, but 4 wins from his first 5 games saw him land the role on a permanent basis. His first game following the announcement saw him guide his team to a 3-1 victory over Birmingham City. They swiftly followed that with a 3-2 triumph against West Bromwich Albion.

This feels like a game where the Hampshire-based side can show they are genuine promotion contenders. However, they will need to bounce back from a 2-1 defeat at Norwich City on Saturday.

Coventry looked to be storming to the Championship title as December started. They held a 10 point gap over their nearest challengers, but have since given the chasing pack some hope.

The Sky Blues kicked off December with an uncharacteristic 3-0 loss at Ipswich Town, although the following game was arguably just as disappointing. They were a goal and a man to the good at Preston North End heading into the final quarter of the clash, only to be pegged back by a Daniel Jebbison strike.

With second-placed Middlesbrough breathing down their necks, a 1-0 win over Bristol City at the weekend was just the tonic.

Southampton have been the dominant force in this fixture in recent years and are unbeaten in 7 meetings with Coventry. This includes their last clash at St Mary’s which they won 2-1 in April 2024.

The Sky Blues last beat the Saints in 2008, but they have never won at St Mary’s Stadium. Their last triumph on the south coast came at The Dell in 2000.

Overall, there is nothing to separate the pair over the years. Both teams have picked up 49 victories against the other, whilst they have played out 46 draws. The last of those finished 1-1 in December 2023.
